Jose Mourinho wants two new midfielders at Manchester United this summer and Paris Saint-Germain star Marco Verratti is at the top of his wish list, according to reports.
Man United are expected to announce the signing of 25-year-old Shakhtar Donetsk defensive midfielder Fred in the coming days as a replacement for Michael Carrick, who retired at the end of the 2017-18 season.
As Carrick joins the coaching staff and Marouane Fellaini‘s contract expires, it leaves Mourinho’s midfield representatives fairly bare with just Nemanja Matic, Ander Herrera, Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba to choose from.
However, The Sun report that Mourinho is keen to bolster his options and wants United to pursue a more advanced midfielder ahead of the 2018-19 campaign.
Lazio star Sergej Milinkovic-Savic was thought to be Mourinho’s preference, but the Serie A club’s £100m valuation has swayed his head towards other alternatives, more specifically PSG’s Verratti.
Verratti, 25, is considered one of the most exciting midfielders in European football and has previously been compared to Barcelona legend Xavi after moving to France from Pescara in 2012.
The reported interest in the Italy international sets up the exciting prospect of a dynamic midfield three consisting of Fred, Verratti and Pogba which would surely prompt a bigger challenge for the Premier League title come May 2019.
