With no trophies to speak of, a guaranteed sixth-place finish and failure to qualify for the Champions League for the second season in succession, Arsene Wenger’s 22nd and final season at Arsenal will go down as the worst overseen by the Frenchman since he arrived in 1996.

The Gunners are already guaranteed to finish the 2017-18 campaign with the lowest Premier League points tally they’ve managed under Wenger, regardless of the result from Sunday’s trip to Huddersfield Town.

Wenger’s man have amassed 60 points after 37 matches this term—an average of 1.62 points per game—and even victory at the John Smith’s Stadium on Sunday would see Arsenal fall four points shy of their current worst points finish during Wenger’s stay (67 in 2005-06).

However, even then that sum was good enough for Arsenal to finish fourth, and the gradual spread of power in the Premier League now means such sub-par performance won’t yield such reward.

The undesirable accolades don’t end there, though. Wenger’s defence has come in for major criticism during his last campaign at the club, and this season has seen the club concede more goals than in any league campaign since 1983-84.

That’s the last time the north London outfit leaked more than the 51 goals they’ve let in over the course of their 37 matches—equal to 1.34 goals conceded per game—and that figure could rise at Huddersfield in Sunday’s curtain call.

To put into context how poor the defence has been, Arsenal played seven seasons of 42-game formatted league football since they conceded more than 51 goals in a league campaign (60 in 1983-84).

The club has also lost 13 times in the league this term, which is another low in the Wenger era, his previous worst for defeats in a league campaign having been 11 (2005-06).

After 2016-17 saw Wenger’s Arsenal finish fifth—his first time ending up outside the Premier League’s top four since arriving in London—this season has brought a new low as they settle for sixth.

Arsenal are on the verge of their worst Premier League points tally in more than two decades, have no trophies to speak of, have lost more league games than ever before under Wenger and with no European future in immediate view. Fans will hope it can only get better from here.
