Sergio Romero will not travel with the Argentina squad for the World Cup next month due to a joint blockage in his right knee that will require surgery.
Such a procedure is likely to rule Romero out of Manchester United’s pre-season tour of the United States, which begins in mid-July.
David de Gea, assuming Spain go beyond the round of 16 at the World Cup, will also miss the start of the tour as he earns some rest after his finest ever season in a Man United shirt.
What we have, therefore, is something of a vacancy between the sticks during a pre-season which could serve as a springboard for a number of young players – especially since Under-18s coach Kieran McKenna has joined Jose Mourinho’s staff.
Joel Pereira is likely to get the chance to put on the gloves for United having served as third choice throughout the 2017/18 campaign. Sam Johnstone and Dean Henderson are both on loan but look set to make their respective moves to Aston Villa and Shrewsbury Town permanent.
Kieran O’Hara, who traveled with the squad for pre-season last year, will step in as No.2 and play with the senior team for the first time. And Matej Kovar, who joined from FC Slovacko in January and has worked with McKenna over the last few months, could indeed be in line for a surprise call-up to the travelling squad as third choice.
