Reports in Germany suggest that Arsenal are the favourites to sign 29-year-old centre-back Sokratis Papastathopoulos (via Kicker).
Now that the season is over, most Arsenal fans will be turning their attention to the transfer window and which players the club should look to bring in.
There are some key positions which are desperately in need of reinforcement and most will agree that centre-back is one of them.
Per Mertesacker is set to retire from playing and Laurent Koscielny will miss the next few months with injury so the Gunners will certainly need to sign at least one player in the window.
That is at least the thinking behind these reports from Germany where Kicker is reporting that the Gunners are favourites to sign Borussia Dortmund centre-back Sokratis Papastathopoulos.
The Greek international defender is out of contract in 2019 and Kicker is claiming that the 29-year-old is refusing to sign a new deal.
Sokratis has a history with former Borussia Dortmund stars Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang so his signing would certainly make sense.
Sokratis Papastathopoulos was once amongst the best centre-backs in the Bundesliga. His form has dipped this season but he still has certain qualities. He could be a shrewd signing at the reported price tag of €15-20 million.
