Former Arsenal player and current Manchester City coach Mikel Arteta is now reportedly the frontrunner for the manager’s job (via Sky Sports).
It’s an appointment which could prove as controversial as it is surprising if Mikel Arteta does become Arsenal’s new manager.
The Spaniard made almost 150 appearances for the club over five years as a player before retiring and taking up an assistant coaching role at Manchester City.
Working under Pep Guardiola, Arteta has reportedly become an integral part of the coaching setup at City and is highly thought of.
He was first linked with the Arsenal management position several weeks ago but in the last few days, things have escalated.
The likes of Max Allegri and Julian Nagelsmann have also been cited as strong contenders but neither man appears willing to leave their respective clubs.
If he does get the job then the 36-year-old would be the second youngest managerial appointment in the club’s history.
Mikel Arteta would be a bold appointment from Arsenal. He is young and inexperienced in a managerial position but is certainly hungry and full of ideas. He is clearly an intelligent and articulate man who has been schooled by some of the brightest minds in European football. If he does get the job then it will be fascinating to see how he does.
