Ashley Young reveals dressing room atmosphere ahead of FA Cup final

Ashley Young has shed light on an “excited” Manchester United dressing room in the week leading up to the FA Cup final with Chelsea.

Jose Mourinho’s rounded off their Premier League campaign with a 1-0 win over Watford on Sunday that took them to 81 points.

They can now dedicate their focus purely towards the biggest game of the season – although their performances since beating Tottenham Hotspur in the semi-final suggest their minds have been on this game for some time.

Speaking to MUTV, Young noted that there was a real buzz around the squad ahead of the trip to Wembley on Saturday.

“Of course there’s excitement [for the final],” he said. “There is not anyone who is not excited.”

“We’ve been there before and must prepare this week in the right way, which we will do. Everybody is wanting to be starting, wanting to play, and I’m no different.

“I want to play in the FA Cup final and obviously want success. There is no better feeling than when you win the FA Cup and walk up those stairs to pick up that trophy. Hopefully, we can do that.”

The painful aspect of the lead-up to this game is that finals, by their very nature, cannot be predicted even in a loose sense. They take up a totally different tone, complexion and shape to league games or even European ties, becoming something of a cagey event of fine margins and gradual buildups.

But this group of United players can take confidence that they have plenty of recent success at Wembley to look back on, starting with that last minute winner against Everton from Anthony Martial in April 2016. Since then they have beaten Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final, Leicester in the Community Shield, Southampton in the League Cup final and most recently Spurs in the semi, along with winning the Europa League in Stockholm.
