Michael Carrick has made it clear that Paul Pogba has a big future at Manchester United amid suggestions the Frenchman could leave.
Pogba has endured a mixed campaign, often serving as a lightning rod for critics and often proving to be the decisive performer for Man United in big games.
He admitted last week that, following a season with no trophies, leaving Man United in the summer was not a possibility he had completely ruled out.
But Carrick, when asked about Pogba’s future at the club, emphasised that the 25-year-old was a huge part of United’s plans going forward.
“It’s a very silly question, really,” he said.
“Of course he’s got a future, he’s a big player for us, he’s at a great age, he’s got his peak years ahead of him, so it’s not something I’d give a second thought to, to be honest.”
You could understand Pogba wanting to leave United. This is a club possibly on the verge of a classic Mourinho meltdown and the boss, more often than not, has stultified the Frenchman’s progress by failing to create an attacking style which has movement, innovation, speed, or even the slightest speck of likability.
But perhaps this is where Carrick comes in. Pogba has already made note of how the 36-year-old has helped him progress and he would, no doubt, glean valuable pieces of information by working closely with the Englishman next season.
This is a team devoid of much tactical nuance and structure. And this is often to the detriment of Pogba. Perhaps the arrival of Carrick and Kieran McKenna to the coaching staff will go some way to addressing that.
