Romelu Lukaku will return to Carrington for training with his Manchester United teammates on Tuesday for the first time since picking up an ankle injury last month.
The Belgian was forced off during Man United’s 2-1 win over Arsenal and has since been in Belgium with specialists as he works to recover in time for the FA Cup final.
Jose Mourinho has been unable to confirm whether he would return in time for the clash with Chelsea, noting last week that he might have to settle for a place on the bench.
But he confirmed following Sunday’s 1-0 win over Watford that the 25-year-old would make a return to training this week.
“I know that Romelu [Lukaku] will be back for Tuesday because he’s in the last week [of rehabilitation] and we have to see but Anthony I have no more,” he said.
Lukaku will face something of a race against time to reach peak fitness in time for Saturday. That he has missed three matches probably means that he won’t be exactly 100 per cent, but in a way that doesn’t matter.
Many players by this stage of the campaign aren’t at their best; many are most likely playing through injuries.
In the cauldron of Wembley, however, with the unique feel of ‘Cup Final’ day, any concerns about nagging injuries or fitness will go out the window. And you can be sure Lukaku will be firing on every cylinder for the crescendo moment of United’s campaign.
