Juan Mata has voiced his disappointment following Manchester United’s FA Cup final defeat to Chelsea, insisting supporters deserved more from their team.
Jose Mourinho’s men begun the game in directionless fashion and a Phil Jones mistake at the back allowed Eden Hazard, the best player on the pitch, to put Chelsea ahead from the spot after 21 minutes.
Man United fought back in the second half, creating a series of openings and pinning Antonio Conte’s team back, but couldn’t find a goal to force the game into extra time.
Writing in his weekly blog, Mata, who came on for the closing stages, told supporters that they deserved a better performance from United at Wembley.
“Hi everyone,” he wrote. “This is the last post of the season and, obviously, I would’ve liked it to be very different.”
“Losing the last game of the season in such an special occasion as the FA Cup final is really frustrating. We wanted to finish the year with a smile, to give back all your support, but that wasn’t the case, unfortunately.
“We were looking forward to the game, and we know that you were too. I’m terribly disappointed that we couldn’t win for you, because once again your support in the stadium was amazing. You deserved a different ending to the season.
“As regards to the game itself, especially during the second half we had several chances to score and take the game to the extra time, but we didn’t make it, so we have to be fair and congratulate Chelsea.
“Sadly, we go on holidays with the bitter taste of the defeat, that will remain for a while, but at the same time we’re already thinking about the future. We must get better and try to go back to the path of victory that defines this magnificent club and all of you.
“Thank you so much for your support throughout the season, especially in the bad times like this Saturday; it means a lot to us. I know that right now words are not enough but this is all I can say to you.
“Thank you all. We will come back stronger.”
The atmosphere of gloom has hit United hard since the final whistle blew on Saturday. That feeling among supporters – exasperated, angry, deflated, more critical of Mourinho with each passing day – has surfaced a few times this season.
Sevilla, of course, was something of a watershed moment; defeats to Bristol City and Manchester City in December were met with a similar amount of vitriol; West Bromwich Albion and Brighton and Hove Albion compounded the angst.
The painful difference about this latest set-back, however, is its possibility to set a dreary tone ahead of next season. Supporters will not want the 19 May 2018 to be the day which set in motion a classic Mourinho third season meltdown which forces their club to start all over again.
