Chelsea player ratings: Newcastle (A)

Chelsea ended the Premier League season on a sour note as Newcastle strolled past the Blues in emphatic fashion, to epitomise what has been an extremely underwhelming season under Antonio Conte.

Heading into the game Chelsea were still in with a slim chance of making the top four, but an easy 4-0 victory for Liverpool over Brighton ended any hopes of a Champions League campaign next season and the result at St James’ Park only compounded the Blues’ misery coming into next weekend’s FA Cup final against Manchester United. Dwight Gayle’s close-range header opened the scoring for the Magpies, and from then on Chelsea were always second best, falling further behind after half-time through a quick-fire Ayoze Perez double.

Mohammed Diame and Jonjo Shelvey also forced good saves from the returning Thibaut Courtois, whilst Olivier Giroud’s acrobatic effort was Chelsea’s best chance of the game.

Chelsea can end the season on a high next weekend should they beat 2nd placed Manchester United in the FA Cup final, but irrespective of the result, Conte’s future as Chelsea manager is in doubt.
