Victor Lindelof explains why Man United's win over Swansea was special

Victor Lindelof has made note of how Manchester United’s attacking players “had a lot of fun” in the first half of their 2-0 win over Swansea City.

Jose Mourinho, having hit out at his side’s display against Brighton and Hove Albion a fortnight earlier, saw his players make a ferocious start on Saturday.

Romelu Lukaku scored his 100th Premier League goal after five minutes and Alexis Sanchez added a second 15 minutes later as the pair, along with Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata, pulled the visitors all over the place with some superb interplay.

And Lindelof, speaking after the game, enthused at how United’s attacking quartet buzzed around the pitch with such a high tempo.

“I think we started the game very good, we kept the ball very well and then we scored two very good goals,” he said.

“In the second half we came out and they had a few chances, but other than that we controlled the game very well.

“The front players had great movement and had a great buzz between them. They had a lot of freedom and I think they showed it out there – they had a lot of fun.”

Back in August, speaking after a 4-0 over the same side, Mourinho spoke of “letting the horses run freely”, but it seems as if the 55-year-old only wants to do this against Swansea – and not against, say, Manchester City or Sevilla.

This is the greatest source of frustration this season. Forget particular individuals – when United move the ball around quickly and move forward with purpose, they are genuinely frightening.

And why Mourinho doesn’t allow for his players to realise that in the biggest of games – at a time when it really matters – simply boggles the mind. It is almost as if he doesn’t trust them, or perhaps overthinks the bigger encounters, determined to imprint his identity onto them.

That attitudinal approach, without doubt, is the main thing that needs to change for next season.
