Mourinho insists Man Utd deserve to finish in second place

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has insisted his side deserve to finish in second place in the Premier League and has warned competitors that his team will fight for it.

The Portuguese manager saw his club start the season incredibly well, going toe to toe with Manchester City but eventually witnessed their inconsistencies cost them.

Despite some questionable displays, United find themselves in second place and have been there for the majority of the season.

The points gap to their fierce rivals and league leaders City still remains large but Mourinho should be pleased that for all his player’s faults, they’ve improved in the league and currently hold onto second place.

The former Chelsea manager will surely be disappointed, as will fans, if the players drop their guard and drop down the table.

According to the Sports Mole, Jose said to Sky Sports News: “Manchester City is not important for me. Important for me is that, since the moment we left the first position and went to second, we stayed there for the whole of the season.

“We deserve to finish second in spite of what you can say, the criticisms you can make. You all say the third, the fourth, the fifth, the sixth are all better than us, but they are not better than us because we have more points than them.

“We are going to fight. Seven matches to go, we are going to fight to finish second.”

The Red Devils have a relatively straightforward run in to the end of the Premier League with only Manchester City and Arsenal proving the difficult opponents.

Wins against both will be crucial and morale boosting but it’s the Sky Blues that will potentially prove to be more important.

Cutting the gap down will help but it’s also about trying to keep away from the teams who linger below and the Gunners are too far below to be considered as direct rivals.

A loss against City will also see them win the title in front of their own fans, a sight that’ll surely be too sore for Manchester United to bear.
