Manchester United star Michael Carrick has admitted he didn’t think he would be into coaching and predicted that he would eventually become a manager.
The Englishman is at the end of his career as a footballer as he announced earlier in the season that he plans to retire in the summer.
United fans needn’t be upset however as Carrick will remain at the club as a coach having accepted Jose Mourinho’s offer to join the backroom staff.
The veteran’s composure and vision in midfield will surely be missed but perhaps he could bring those attributes into his new role.
Mourinho will have a huge task at his hand in replacing his player and perhaps will be caught by surprise by his player’s coaching ability.
According to Goal, Michael said: “Three or four years ago I probably wouldn’t have thought I’d go down that route. It wasn’t until I started my coaching badges that I found that I enjoyed it.
“Eventually, I think I would like to be a manager. It looks easier than it obviously is, but of course it’s not easy. There is an element that keeps nagging away at me in games where I think what I would do there and what would I change.”
Jose would potentially be doing the Red Devils a favour by grooming Michael Carrick into a manager if that turns out to be the case.
Perhaps when the Portuguese manager moves on from the club then the midfielder could take control of the reigns at Old Trafford.
However, Carrick will have Ryan Giggs to contend with for that role given how the latter has been eyeing up the role for a few years now.
The Welshman already has a little experience to give him the upper hand having been amongst the coaching staff before and having been Louis Van Gaal‘s assistant.
Giggs also currently manages his home country and if he does the job well, he’ll certainly be a candidate for the Manchester United job in the future.
