Manchester United have reportedly opened talks for Barcelona’s Ivan Rakitic as they step up their efforts to complete the transfer.
The Croatian has been a key figure for the La Liga club all season long but has been linked with a move away from them regardless.
Jose Mourinho is said to be keen on taking advantage of the situation as he hopes to add some more quality to his midfield.
The club currently have Michael Carrick, Marouane Fellaini, Ander Herrera, Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Scott McTominay as their options.
However, United could potentially lose all of the first three names for various reasons leaving their engine room depleted of resources.
According to 101 Great Goals, Don Balon report that the Red Devils have opened preliminary talks with the Spanish giants for Ivan.
The talented midfielder would certainly add quality to the club but questions will be asked over where he fits into the current side.
With Pogba and Matic essentially the first options for the starting XI, it leaves little room for Ivan Rakitic to operate in.
Mourinho has never hidden his preference for a 4-2-3-1 formation and that means room for only a midfield duo for most matches.
The Portuguese boss is likely to invest in his midfield this summer but he’ll be more focussed on adding depth than proven first team quality.
However, preliminary talks suggest a more serious advancement than initial reports claimed and perhaps there’s a reason why Jose feels the need to invest in Barcelona’s Rakitic.
