Matteo Darmian has given the green light to complete a move to Juventus this summer after falling out of favour under Jose Mourinho at Manchester United, according to reports from Italy.
The full-back, signed by Louis van Gaal in 2015, enjoyed a decent end to the 2016/17 campaign but has drifted into anonymity this year.
He has only made one start in 2018, with his last Premier League start coming at Anfield all the way back in October.
And according to Italian media outlet Tuttosport, Darmian has agreed to move back to Italy after growing exasperated at a lack of minutes.
“United’s full-back gives the green light to the Bianconeri, now it’s up to Marotta to close quickly,” the report claims.
Sunday’s 1-0 defeat against West Bromwich Albion made clear a number of things about Mourinho’s set-up going forward, and chief among them was the grim, inert predictability of United’s full-backs.
Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia, whilst sound defensively, have growingly shown this season a kind of one dimensionality to their attacking approach that opponents can defend very easily. An overhaul, not too dissimilar from Pep Guardiola splashing out £130m on full-backs last year, is desperately needed in the summer, and nobody will question the notion that Darmian needs to be part of the necessary exodus to make way for more dynamic options in preparation for next year.
