Michael Carrick has hailed Manchester United’s 17-year-old sensation Angel Gomes after he made his second appearance for the club on Friday night.
The England youth international almost scored just moments after replacing Marcus Rashford in Man United’s FA Cup Fourth Round tie against Yeovil Town at Huish Park.
Gomes went round two players brilliantly before striking a fierce drive into the side-netting, much to the disappointment of his more senior teammates and travelling United fans.
“I was willing him to score, he has done great,” Carrick told the club’s official television channel, MUTV. “That is what he is all about, he stands people up and goes past them, he will probably be a bit annoyed that he’s hit the side-netting but he’s done fantastic.”
Gomes made his debut for the club at the end of the last Premier League campaign, coming on to replace Wayne Rooney in the club great’s final Old Trafford appearance. Jose Mourinho has been eager to promote youth, with regular chances handed to Scott McTominay and debuts given to Gomes, Josh Harrop and Demi Mitchell as well as first-team experience for Matt Olosunde and Matty Willock.
Carrick’s pleased to see Mourinho giving youngsters at the club a chance to progress.
“It’s great to see the lads coming through and getting a chance,” Carrick said. “He trained with us last week and got on as a sub so it’s a great night for him.”
Gomes is unlikely to get many more first-team chances this season, with the FA Cup now entering serious stages and United unlikely to get an opposition as weak as Yeovil Town again. However, he’ll train again, and it’s helping his development massively.
