Jose Mourinho has indicated an interest in AS Monaco full-back Djibril Sidibe ahead of the summer transfer window.
Manchester United, having been humiliatingly knocked out of the UEFA Champions League by La Liga side Sevilla, have only the FA Cup to compete for this season.
They face Manchester City, local rivals, on Saturday and must avoid defeat to ensure that the Blues don’t secure the Premier League title in the Manchester derby.
Thus, it’s little surprise that Mourinho is reportedly looking ahead to the summer already to see how Man United can catch up with Pep Guardiola’s City.
Le 10 Sport suggest that French international Sidibe is keen to join United this summer.
Mourinho has fallen out, or simply does not trust, young English left-back Luke Shaw, who is still struggling to be given a run of games in the first team, some 20 months since Mourinho became United boss.
Vice-captain Antonio Valencia has been hugely impressive as a converted winger in the right-back position for a few years now, but is ageing and United could do better in that position, while utility man Ashley Young has been first-choice left-back for some time.
Sidibe could sort those problems, able to play on both flanks in defence.
Other options are Juventus’ Alex Sandro, though it’s possible United will balk at a transfer fee of up to €70m. Celtic’s Kieran Tierney is a cheaper alternative as well as Sidibe’s Monaco teammate Fabinho, who can also play in defensive midfield.
