Jose Mourinho has reiterated that he doesn’t know whether Marouane Fellaini will be a Manchester United player this season.
Fellaini rejected terms offered by the club over a new deal back in September and, despite pressure placed on Ed Woodward by Mourinho to keep him at Old Trafford, looks likely to leave in June in order to secure a more lucrative financial package elsewhere.
Reports have claimed that Turkish club Galatasaray have offered him around £150,000 a week, but Roma are said to be the Belgian’s preferred next destination.
And Mourinho, speaking at a press conference ahead of Man United’s trip to Crystal Palace, noted that he didn’t know anything about his midfielder’s future.
“Is he going to stay or leave I don’t know,” he said. “I want him to stay, the club want him to stay, the process, negotiations, numbers, distances between the offer and what he wants, I really don’t know.”
This saga has reached a point where you wonder why United are even wasting resources and time to keep a player whose preferences clearly lie elsewhere – especially when attention ought to be focused on bringing in the likes of Jean-Michael Seri, Jorginho or Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.
The 30-year-old will only receive one more big deal in his career and United simply aren’t interested in handing him three more years and £150,000 a week, otherwise this whole thing would be wrapped up right now.
But other clubs are. Turkey, Italy or France appear to be the most likely destinations, and United, in response, need to stop worrying about preserving what is already gone and look towards the future.
