<—Article Start—>It’s been an uncomfortable few weeks for Jose Mourinho as the British media seem to be furthering their attempts to set up another case of ‘third-season syndrome’, this time at Manchester United.
There have been floods of reports on Mourinho’s negativity across pre-season, criticism of his own players and indirect digs at the Man United board since July and very little on the positive aspect of the job he’s doing.
Last Sunday’s toothless 3-2 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion certainly didn’t help calm the whirlwind of pessimism surrounding Mourinho. However, the United manager has killed the reports suggesting a rift between himself and club chief executive Ed Woodward.
When asked about his current relationship with Woodward in his pre-match press conference ahead of Monday’s meeting with Tottenham Hotspur, Mourinho’s answer was as concise as it needed to be: “Of course. No problems.”
The primary reasoning behind a potential strained relationship between two of United’s most important names is due to the club’s failure to sign a new central defender in the summer, with Mourinho suggesting none from a list of five arrived at Old Trafford.
Hopefully the United boss wasn’t just telling the media what they didn’t want to hear and all is calm with the club heirachy, otherwise it wouldn’t be surprising to see a new face at the helm next summer or even before the campaign is over.<—Article End—>
