Denis Irwin claims that the attacking quality of Manchester United can see them have success in the latter stages of the season.
The Irishman explained that this stage of the campaign creates tighter games because they often mean more, with clubs scrapping for the second position, top four, and a plethora of sides looking to avoid relegation.
In the FA Cup, it’s down to the business end at the quarter-finals stage, where Man United are set to host Brighton & Hove Albion soon, as well as in the UEFA Champions League, with United midway through a two-legged round of 16 tie against La Liga outfit Sevilla.
But the depth and strength of manager Jose Mourinho’s attacking options will allow success for United, according to former-Red Irwin.
“I think from here on in now, games do have a habit of tightening up,” Irwin suggested.
“So, there’s going to be a lot of close games and hopefully we keep doing defensively what we’ve been doing, and we’ve got enough going forwards now with Alexis [Sanchez] coming in and [Romelu] Lukaku banging the goals in.”
The purple patch that Jesse Lingard is undergoing is of huge importance to United. The Englishman came off the bench against Chelsea last Sunday to head home a winner.
“Jesse [Lingard] has come in with a lot more this year, so there’s good avenues there,” Irwin continued. We just need to keep going because as I said at this stage of the season it starts to tighten up a bit now we’re coming to the money end of it.
“Obviously we got a huge win against Chelsea on Sunday, but there’s a huge battle I think for the top-four.
“It’s a big month coming up with Sevilla and Brighton at home. We’ve just had Chelsea at home and got Liverpool at home as well.
“So, it’s a battle to finish as high as possible. We’re in second place at the moment – and we seemed to be forever in sixth last year so that’s a huge improvement.”
United have often looked very capable of dealing with tight games and an opposition defence sitting back. But on other occasions, the team has looked bereft of ideas.
Being the Mourinho side with creativity and the ability to break teams down in a non-laborious manner will be key in these last three months of the season.
