Romelu Lukaku was embarrassed by the contract between him and Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane in Manchester United’s 2-0 defeat to Spurs, former-Red Rio Ferdinand suggested.
Kane had a busy night despite not scoring while Lukaku had little to work with, though missed a big chance to bring the score back to 2-1 and could have held the ball up better on a number of occasions.
England international Kane was key.in Christian Eriksen’s shock opener after just 11 seconds at Wembley, a goal which really defined the game, one in which United never truly recovered in. Ferdinand, speaking as a pundit after the game, thought “Kane showed today why he’s the best striker in the league and one of the most potent in Europe because he’s bullied United’s centre-halves.
“He totally dominated them physically and brought other people into play,” Ferdinand lauded, on BT Sport. “The contrast between him and Lukaku today was so evident it was unbelievable from up here where we watched it.”
Rio seemed to hint that Lukaku’s hold-up play had to improve.
“The ball going into him [Kane], sticking, holding centre halves off and bringing others into the game. That’s a real No. 9. That’s what you want to see a No. 9 do,” suggesting that Lukaku hasn’t quite been able to do that.
Sitting alongside Ferdinand was former-Spurs boss Harry Redknapp who backed up his younger colleague, claiming that “there’s no comparison. He’s on a different level to Lukaku.”
While United fans have, on the whole, been pleased with Lukaku’s first season at Old Trafford, all will accept that he is not on Kane’s level. And that’s because no one is on Kane’s level in the Premier League right now.
