Hector Bellerin has claimed that everyone at Arsenal knew that Mesut Özil would sign a new contract to remain at the club (via Evening Standard).
What a busy January transfer window that was for Arsenal. They may have sold some fringe and wantaway players and brought in two first-teamers but the best piece of business was undoubtedly the new contract for Mesut Özil.
The German signed a new deal which makes him the highest-paid player at the club and will keep him at Arsenal until 2021.
It was a big shock to many people outside of the club but not, it seems, to those inside.
“Everyone in the training ground, everyone in the team knew he was going to stay,” claims Hector Bellerin.
“He is a guy that loves London, loves Arsenal and he always gets really angry when things don’t go well so you know how much it means for him to win or lose for this club. So I think everyone in the club, the dressing room was sure.
“It is as exciting as a new signing. To have a player with his qualities and all he brings to the team to sign for a few more years, it is really exciting for Arsenal and for the fans.”
It was great to see the news that Mesut Özil has decided to remain at the club. The German is the most important player at the club and his renewal is a major win for Arsenal.
