Manchester United target and Bordeaux forward Malcom has revealed that club president Stéphane Martin convinced him to stay with the Ligue 1 side until the end of the season.
The Brazilian, having enjoyed a scintillating first half of the 2017/18 campaign, emerged on the radar of both Man United and Arsenal during the early stages of the transfer window.
Arsenal briefly considered targeting Malcom as a replacement for Alexis Sanchez but managed to agree a swap deal with United involving Henrikh Mkhitaryan instead.
And Malcom, when asked about his career prospects, noted that the club president asked him to stay and insisted he would leave in the summer instead.
“It’s my dream to progress in my career,” he said. “I spoke to the president, he told me that he knew it was my dream, but that he needed me.
“I told him he could count on me until the end of the season. I will do everything to help Bordeaux finish in the top six in Ligue 1.”
United’s transfer window very quickly went from being about Malcom and Lucas Moura, who ultimately joined Tottenham Hotspur, to signing Arsenal’s best player whilst removing a player who had long been ineffective in attack under Jose Mourinho.
And you can somewhat understand why the 55-year-old, in turn, doesn’t feel the need to address his attacking options over the summer given the array of talent at his disposal, providing him with the perfect chance to focus on bolstering his midfield options instead.
