Ajax’s attacking starlet Justin Kluivert has insisted he has had no contact with Jose Mourinho despite rumours linking him to Manchester United in recent days.
The Mirror claimed that Kluivert was the subject of significant interest from Man United and that the club were in advanced talks for the Ajax man with a £10m + add-ons possible.
United manager Mourinho reportedly spoke to Kluivert after the UEFA Europa League final, where United won 2-0 to beat Ajax to the trophy. The Mirror suggested Mourinho had told Kluivert that he wanted to sign him one day.
“I have heard the rumours but I haven’t spoken to Mourinho,” Kluivert insisted to Dutch outlet Voetbal.
“A move to Manchester United wouldn’t make sense,” Kluivert said, before adding, “for now.”
There’s no doubting the talent of Justin Kluivert, son of UEFA Champions League winner Patrick who had an extremely successful career in European football.
Whether he’s right for United and United are right for him is another question. The Reds have a wealth of young attacking quality in Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Romelu Lukaku and others coming through the academy.
Kluivert would struggle for regular gametime, and while competition is good for a squad, overcrowding is not.
Mourinho, meanwhile, is insistent that he will not be pursuing attacking targets in this summer’s transfer window as he’s content with his current selection after the signing of Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal in January.
