Paul Pogba has insisted Manchester United must focus on winning themselves and not on anything Manchester City do if they are to make a genuine challenge for the title this season.
Pogba grabbed two assists on Monday night as Man United comfortably dispatched of relegation strugglers Stoke City with a 3-0 win, drawing them closer to local rivals Man City. The gap is now 12 points.
City were beaten 4-3 by Liverpool on Sunday to give United that chance of making up lost ground, and Pogba, who was named Man of the Match on Monday, was asked whether their rivals’ defeat was a bit of motivation in the dressing room.
“Obviously we see that Man City are in front of us and they are losing,” Pogba said. “They are still first, we always want to catch them, so it was good for them to lose.
“But we have to think about ourselves, we have to think about winning. It’s good they lose points but we have to think about winning and try to catch them again.”
United have dropped silly points this season. Jose Mourinho’s side drew with Stoke City early on in the season, and have been beaten by Huddersfield Town, Chelsea and Manchester City as well as drawing with Liverpool. At least three of those five games should have been victories.
Pogba says United cannot consider which games they should and shouldn’t have won.
“To be honest, we’re not looking to the past, we’re just looking to the future to the next games, we just want to catch City. We just have to focus on ourselves.”
