Manchester United are confident Eric Bailly will recover from ankle surgery in time to feature in the Champions League last-16 clash with Sevilla next month, according to reports.
The Ivorian picked up an injury back in November whilst on international duty and, after the club’s attempt at taking ‘conservative’ measures to encourage a quicker recovery, went under the knife in December.
Jose Mourinho stated that he would be a long term absence, predicting a spell on the sidelines of around two to three months.
But according to ESPN‘s Rob Dawson, medical staff at Carrington are becoming increasingly confident that the 23-year-old, who has started running again, will return in time for Man United’s game against the Spanish side on February 21.
Bailly played a fundamental role in United’s emphatic start to the 2017/18 campaign, coupling up brilliantly with Phil Jones to provide a platform from which Mourinho’s men could impose themselves on games.
There aren’t many defenders with the same level of natural physical prowess – a kind of inbuilt metal core that sends most bodies flying – and he belongs in Mourinho’s best starting XI without doubt, but you have to start wondering whether constant niggling injuries may hamper how much success he has at Old Trafford.
This is not, after all, the first prolonged spell on the sidelines for him at United. The last thing Mourinho needs is another Phil Jones scenario.
