Ryan Giggs believes that Manchester United’s capture of Alexis Sanchez will be similar to when they signed Robin van Persie from Arsenal.
Both Manchester clubs went for Van Persie, who had just claimed the Premier League ‘Golden Boot’, in 2012 and the Dutchman eventually went to Old Trafford and fired them to the title with 26 league goals.
And Sanchez, also Arsenal’s top scorer last season and a figure of interest to Manchester City, has likewise moved to Old Trafford in a swap deal involving Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Giggs noted that Man United, just like with Van Persie, are signing a ready made talent in Sanchez.
“Manchester United signing Alexis Sanchez is similar to Robin van Persie in the sense that they’re getting a ready-made superstar,” he said.
“You’re seeing the contribution already with Anthony Martial upping his performances.
“That can happen when top players come in, those around them lift their levels, and there will be some difficult selection decisions for Jose Mourinho.”
If nothing else, Sanchez’s arrival demonstrates emphatically that United remain a huge attraction to players across the globe.
Secondly, though, the club’s social media coverage of the signing dwarfed pretty much any other club in the world. Within just a few hours Sanchez’s announcement video had reached four million views; Man City’s announcement that Kevin de Bruyne, their best player, had penned a new contract didn’t even reach 10,000 engagements within that time.
But while Sanchez’s arrival serves as a reminder to all of the club’s stature, such a notion will indeed mean little if the club’s new No.7 cannot follow in Van Persie’s footsteps and add a new, central dimension to this United side going forward.
