Louis van Gaal: These ex-Man United players are to blame for me being sacked

Louis van Gaal has blamed a group of ex-Manchester United players for his demise at the club which led to his sacking in 2016.

The Dutchman was fired by Man United after months of rumours alluding to such a decision, just days after guiding the Reds to their first trophy since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013. A Jesse Lingard extra-time winner saw van Gaal lift the FA Cup, only to be booted out of the club soon after.

Jose Mourinho replaced him, and although it appeared van Gaal was acting magnanimously after his exit, in recent weeks, he’s come out all guns blazing, attacking United on all fronts for the way they treated him.

One particular group he aimed his venom at were the ex-players turned pundits, such as Gary Neville and Paul Scholes.

“The former players of United started to have a go, saying that I was giving the fans boring football,” van Gaal said. “That struck me. It was directed, organised.

“After a while, I started to think I’m losing my authority this way towards the players. So I had to make concessions in my approach of the players.

“That was tough, because I’ve always had my own way of coaching.’’

Van Gaal was treated poorly by United. For rumours to surface of Mourinho replacing him before he had even lifted the FA Cup above his head on Cup Final day, just minutes after the full-time whistle had blown at Wembley, was far from classy and not suitable for United.

It was badly managed. However, van Gaal has revealed just how petty he can be by describing how he turned down the Belgium job simply to take more money off United in his severance package.

Van Gaal wasn’t unfairly sacked, his side played poor football and he failed to finish in the top four in his second season in charge, However, he was sometimes unfairly criticised, but not too frequently, and was certainly treated badly by the club in the final stages of his tenure.
