Gary Neville has hailed Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba as “sensational” after a Man of the Match performance.
The Frenchman was named Man United’s best player on the pitch after grabbing two assists and performing superbly, running the show, in a comfortable 3-0 victory against relegation strugglers Stoke City.
Pogba was playing slightly further forward than often this season having had great success in such a position against Everton at Goodison Park on New Year’s Day. He was named Man of the Match in that game, too.
Neville suggested manager Jose Mourinho should utilise that option more often, including in big games.
“I thought he was sensational, Pogba was fantastic,” Neville said of the 24-year-old’s performance against Stoke.
“But I think maybe in the big games, maybe in the big European games, Jose might look at using the three, which, to be fair, I think he played in Everton away where he played on that left-hand side.
“When he’s got that freedom to roam, to influence the game, he connects the team from back to front.
“I know Jesse Lingard plays in that no. 10 role but Pogba’s really the magic, you want to get him on the ball as much as possible.”
Pogba captained United frequently over the festive period in the absence of club captain Michael Carrick and vice-captain Antonio Valencia.
He assisted Valencia on the Ecuadorian’s return, the right-back taking back the captain’s armband and scoring a first-half screamer to put United in front against Stoke.
Pogba assisted once more later on, this time to his France teammate Anthony Martial who also finished wonderfully from long-range.
The United star is now on nine assists for the season, despite having missed 10 games through injury and suspension. His influence on the team is unquestionable now, and he’s easily the best outfield player in the side.
