Jamie Redknapp has claimed Manchester United’s midfielders other than Paul Pogba are all far too ‘similar’.
The Reds have been without Pogba for the last three games as the Frenchman serve a three-match suspension following a straight red car in Man United’s ruthless 3-1 away win against Arsenal two weeks ago.
That’s left Jose Mourinho with Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera. Belgian midfielder Marouane Fellaini, a fundamentally different option due to his height, has been out injured since the November international break.
United have often lacked creativity and penetration without Pogba.
“They miss him so much at the moment,“ Redknapp said on Sky Sports at the weekend.
“Controlling that midfield, it just gives them legs in there and a bit more creativity.”
United did beat West Bromwich Albion 2-1 on Sunday afternoon, but against one of the Premier League’s relegation strugglers, it wasn’t a completely dominating display as Herrera and Matic started in midfield.
“At times with Herrera and Matic, it’s very similar,” Redknapp continued, “no one really pops that ball around quickly.”
Herrera had a fantastic season last year under Mourinho with fans calling for him to be named club captain after Wayne Rooney left in the summer to rejoin his boyhood team Everton. But this season’s performances have been below-par, and Herrera is yet to have a genuinely impressive performance.
Pogba’s return against Bristol City in the EFL Cup quarter-final on Wednesday is well-needed.
