Manchester United will continue to fight for the Premier League title until the final game of the season, manager Jose Mourinho has insisted.
The Reds are second favourites to lift the trophy at the end of the season, having not won England’s top division since Sir Alex Ferguson after the conclusion of a victorious 2012/13 season.
Manchester City are currently clear favourites and running away with it, though, sitting 11 points above Man United before the halfway point of the season has even been reached.
That won’t stop Mourinho and his side, though, according to the Portuguese.
”Last match in the Premier League, until then every match, we go, every match we try to win,” Mourinho said.
“We don’t want to go on holiday. We want to play until the last match.”
It’s an attitude shared by his players, who have consistently come out and said the same thing.
An 11-point gap is huge, but it’s not an unassailable lead for City. Back in a fascinating but gutting 2011/12 campaign when City won their first Premier League title on goal difference, United and their rivals both led eachother by large margins at some stage. But both could recover.
The only reason that gap looks too much for United now is because of City’s excellent form. Pep Guardiola’s side are yet to be beaten in the league this season. But one slip-up, and United will be spoken about as title contenders again.
However, as Antonio Valencia and Nemanja Matic conceded earlier this week, United cannot afford to drop any more points this season if they are to win the title.
