David de Gea 6.5 – Could only blame his defence for West Bromwich Albion’s goal and did well to weather some late pressure from the hosts. Didn’t need to make any extravagant stops.
Antonio Valencia 7 – The way he consistently delivers at right back deserves more credit. Hardly ever looked out of position and moved the ball around with purpose. Worryingly went off with a hamstring problem after 65 minutes.
Chris Smalling 6 – Occasionally struggled with the physical presence of Salomon Rondon but produced a composed display on the ball.
Phil Jones 7 – Once again Manchester United’s best defender, positioning himself astutely and almost always getting to the ball first. Minimised the influence of Oliver Burke.
Ashley Young 7 – Another disciplined, ebullient display from the Englishman. Provided impetus going forward during the early stages, linking up with teammates well. Delivery could have been better at times.
Nemanja Matic 7 – With the visitors looking stagnant in the final third, Matic broke through the lines to destabilise West Brom’s rearguard and create the space for Man United to claim two quick goals. Another assured, vital display.
Ander Herrera 5 – He may have been United’s best player last season, but what he offers this term is a mystery. No thrust going forward, no accuracy with his passing, and no real grit.
Juan Mata 6 – Drifted in and out of the game. Took up good positions at times and provided an assist for Jesse Lingard, but spent periods on the periphery.
Jesse Lingard 6 – Enjoyed a strong first 70 minutes, claiming his seventh goal of the season and buzzing around the pitch, only to burn out just when United needed an outlet on the break.
Marcus Rashford 7 – Claimed his fifth assist of the season with a superb cross for Romelu Lukaku and served as United’s most consistent source of attacking intent.
Romelu Lukaku 6 – Continued his resurgence in front of goal with another superbly taken header in the first half but completely disappeared in the second period.
