Real Madrid are open to letting Manchester United target Mateo Kovacic leave the club over the summer, according to reports from Spain.
Jose Mourinho identified the Croat, who arrived at the Bernabeu in 2015, as a target over the summer but Madrid weren’t willing to sell.
The 54-year-old remains on the lookout for fresh midfield reinforcements and, according to Spanish media outlet Don Balon, the European champions will be open to selling Kovacic at the right price, with the 23-year-old reduced to just ten appearances under Zinedine Zidane this season.
Madrid are likely to oversee a ruthless evolution of personnel over the summer after falling miles behind Barcelona in La Liga and finishing behind Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League, and Kovacic could be one of the casualties.
And he would also be the perfect midfield signing for Mourinho: young, superbly intelligent on the ball, an enthusiastic proponent of ‘pausa’, precise and diverse with his passing, and capable of pressing his opposite number all game.
His raw ability on the ball easily outstrips that of Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini, and Mourinho ought to seriously consider placing enormous emphasis on brining him in as he seeks to evolve his midfield as well next summer.
