Antonio Valencia could face a spell on the touchline during Manchester United’s busiest period of the season after picking up a hamstring injury.
The Ecuadorian was substituted off for 66th-minute for Marcos Rojo in Man United’s 2-1 win against West Bromwich Albion on Sunday afternoon.
Valencia has been vital for Jose Mourinho’s side this season, starting every single one of their 18 Premier League games, and regularly captaining the side.
Mourinho told reporters after the game that “Valencia’s injury is what I call a ‘December injury’.
“It’s the accumulation of games, a muscular problem.”
Valencia’s injury has come at the worst time of the season for United. The Reds have four games scheduled in the next 10 days. Matteo Darmian and Axel Tuanzebe are Mourinho’s options to replace him.
Ashley Young could move from left-back to right-back, potentially opening up an opportunity for Luke Shaw to take the left-back role off Young.
United face two further consecutive away games with a trip to Bristol City for the EFL Cup quarter-final and then a Premier League clash away to Leicester City on December 23. Mourinho will then prepare for games on Boxing Day, December 30 as well as New Year’s Day.
It’s a tough schedule anyway, but any prolonged absence for Valencia, a key player in the side would be terrible news.
