Manchester United have completed the free transfer of 20-year-old goalkeeper Paul Woolston.
The 6ft-tall shotstopper has signed from Newcastle United after being released from the north-east Premier League club, partly due to his height, or lack thereof.
However, Man United coaches have been impressed with Woolston’s distribution in particular. The Reds have been trying to bring Woolston in for the last month or so, according to the Manchester Evening News.
Woolston was named on the bench for Ricky Sbragia’s under-23s side on Friday night in a 7PM kick-off against Wolves.
The top of the table clash in Premier League 2 Division Two at Molineux saw regular U23s goalkeeper Matej Kovar start. Woolston will provide competition for Kovar and Alex Fojtíček over the course of the season.
That’s because a number of talented goalkeepers have left United on a season-long loan. Dean Henderson, the England U21s man, is in action regularly for Sheffield United in the Sky Bet Championship this campaign.
Joel Pereira, backed by United boss Jose Mourinho as the best Portuguese goalkeeper of his generation, is playing in his home country. Kieran O’Hara is also in England’s lower leagues like Henderson.
Sam Johnstone left in the summer, too. Woolston’s height may be a concern for some, but not all goalkeepers have to have huge height.
It probably won’t be long until Woolston makes his debut at under-23 level.
