Napoli will look to bring Matteo Darmian back to Italy over the January transfer window, according to reports.
The full-back has only made seven starts in all competitions this season and continues to attract interest from a variety of Serie A clubs.
His performance during the 2-1 defeat to Bristol City on Wednesday night was arguably the worst of a litany of disasters, prompting many supporters into calling for his departure in January.
And according to the Mirror‘s John Cross, Napoli have made enquiries over prizing Darmian away from Old Trafford following an underwhelming start to the 2017/18 campaign.
Jose Mourinho has been told by the club that he will have to sell before he buys in the January transfer window and Darmian seems like one of the more obvious pieces of deadwood to move on in order to kickstart a much needed overhaul at full-back.
The Italian’s display at Ashton Gate was painful on a number of levels: no composure on the ball, miserably slow, devoid of direction or positional assurance, and just generally, well, languid.
Getting rid of Darmian, who simply hasn’t offered enough since August 2015, in order to land a player with more urgency and power should be the first port of call once 2018 comes around.
