Superagent Jorge Mendes looks set to help facilitate a January move to Manchester United for Barcelona outcast Andre Gomes, according to reports.
Jose Mourinho made attempts to sign the Portuguese midfielder back in the summer of 2016 but he decided to join Barcelona instead.
But he has struggled for minutes and form under Ernesto Valverde this season, making just four starts since the manager’s arrival.
And according to Spanish media outlet Don Balon, Mendes, who has a good relationship with Mourinho, will help Gomes move to Old Trafford over the January transfer window, although he would be cup-tied in Europe having featured in the Champions League this season already.
Gomes has hit a dead end at the Nou Camp, consigned to the occasional substitute appearances as his form continues to dwindle, and there is no doubt that he needs a way out.
The question to answer, I guess, is whether Mourinho should opt for a midfielder who, whilst unavoidably talented, hasn’t made the grade with his performances since his early days at Barcelona over a year ago.
He may be easier to prize away from his current club than, say, Napoli’s Jorginho or Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Weigl next month, but Mourinho may end up regretting not pushing for players in a richer vein of form if Gomes’ problems persist at Old Trafford.
