Jose Mourinho has shared his thoughts on Romelu Lukaku’s recent muted celebrations after scoring for Manchester United.
The Belgian has scored in the Reds’ last two games after a poor spell in goalscoring terms where he received great criticism, particularly after a woeful performance in the Manchester derby last weekend.
But goals have followed against both AFC Bournemouth and West Bromwich Albion as United won by a one-goal margin in both games. Lukaku’s celebrations were minimal for both strikes.
Many have criticised Lukaku for doing that, but Mourinho was adamant he had no issue with it.
“I didn’t celebrate too,” Mourinho explained after the game on Sunday. “[Even though] nobody was happier than me.”
“Fifteen years ago I look at myself celebrating goals. With maturity, you go into levels that you control your emotions better.”
United fans will remember Mourinho’s knee slide down the touchline celebration when managing FC Porto at Old Trafford in the UEFA Champions League. He’s far more composed, or as he would say, mature, these days.
Lukaku, though, is an odd situation, because it’s not as if he wasn’t celebrating his goals during his stunning start to his United career when he scored 11 goals in his first 10 games for the club following a £75m move from Everton in the summer.
Had he never celebrated prolifically, Lukaku’s actions would seem normal, but it’s the change from celebrating to not doing so that makes people query if there is a reason for it. We can’t know.
