Jose Mourinho has insisted that Manchester United deserved their 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion despite losing focus towards the end.
The visitors dominated the opening stages and raced into a 2-0 lead through goals from Romelu Lukaku and Jesse Lingard.
But they struggled to replicate their dominance in the final third after the break and somehow found themselves hanging on after Gareth Barry halved the deficit.
Speaking after the game, Mourinho noted that Man United should have killed the game but made it clear that the visitors deserved to take three points.
“We had a few chances to kill the game, but when we don’t kill the game, I knew that they would react,” he said.
“So when they scored, that’s normal. Alan out everything and tried. But overall, we deserved the victory.”
United have recently developed a habit of racing into commanding positions before unnecessary placing themselves in jeopardy with defensive errors or, perhaps more worryingly, sheer complacency.
Wins over Watford and Arsenal, for example, were decidedly nerve-wracking after United went two goals clear. Wednesday’s win over AFC Bournemouth was a similar story. And even against a truly impotent West Brom attack they gave themselves late jitters.
These are not traits you would associate with a Mourinho side, but the fact that the wins continue to come nonetheless shows that the Portuguese has truly stamped his identity on this group of players.
