Jesse Lingard has noted that Manchester United would be top of the table in any other Premier League season after helping Jose Mourinho’s men to another win over the weekend.
The 25-year-old’s deflected strike against West Bromwich Albion gave Man United their 13th win of the campaign, taking them to 41 points.
Manchester City, on the other hand, have claimed an astonishing 16 wins in a row, claiming 54 points from a possible 56 to cement an 11 point lead.
And Lingard has opined that City’s exhilarating start has precluded Mourinho’s men from earning the praise they deserve for making clear progress this season.
“If we keep winning games that’s the most important thing,” he said.
“With the squad we have got, we have to always believe in each game. Some games we will play badly and win and sometimes we will play well and lose.
“I think any other season we would be top with the points we have, so as long as we keep winning we will see where we are.”
The Englishman is not completely factually correct here. In the previous ten years, United’s current points total would only have them top of the table in four campaigns, while Chelsea’s total would have been top just once.
But the essence of his point makes sense. Mourinho’s men are just one point behind the total managed by the ‘Invincibles’ at this point in the campaign and two behind his Chelsea side that claimed a record points total in 2005.
This has been a remarkably strong start; United deserve to be the best of the rest, so to speak, and are somewhat unfortunate to be paled by the brilliance of Pep Guardiola on the blue half of Manchester.
