Rio Ferdinand has blamed Manchester United’s loss to FC Basel on Wednesday night on failing to take first-half chances.
The Reds dominated proceedings in the first period, with the game looking like it would be a classic Jose Mourinho performance away in Europe: professional, get the job done, no fireworks.
It turned out to be anything but, with Basel coming out for the second half the far better side and scoring in the 88th-minute when they could have done so far earlier, being honest.
“When you’re up in a game and you’re getting opportunities like Man United did in the first half, you have to take your chances,” Ferdinand said on BT Sport after the game.
“At this level you get punished. Basel, we said before the game, would be confident. They rode the storm and showed great experience, great character.”
Ferdinand also explained how it could affect United in a longer-term sense. Mourinho’s side are almost certain to top their group and qualify, they just need a draw against CSKA Moscow at Old Trafford.
However, the Portuguese manager will have to select a proper side, rather than being able to rest players ahead of a busy festive period.
“Man United will be bitterly disappointed because it was an opportunity to rest players in their next game and now they’ve got to keep playing,” Ferdinand explained.
