Manchester United have David de Gea to thank for their immense home record under Jose Mourinho, according to Dean Ashton.
The Reds’ 1-0 victory against Brighton & Hove Albion stretched their unbeaten record at Old Trafford in all competitions to 39 games.
Man United also have one of the best defensive records in Europe this season, particularly at home, where they’ve conceded just two league goals all season.
Ashton, a Sky Sports pundit since his playing days for West Ham and England finished, praised manager Jose Mourinho, but singled out goalkeeper De Gea as the real reason behind the consistency.
“I think we don’t give them enough praise for their defensive unit,” Ashton said on Goals on Sunday.
“I think we probably criticise Jose Mourinho for that side of it.
“That (record) takes some doing but when you’ve got the best goalkeeper in the world behind you, I think that makes a huge difference.”
Ashton is correct, it’s not a meagre record. Mourinho has broken records at United, a club with arguably the most impressive history in the country, with these stats.
It’s not solely down to De Gea, but he has saved the blushes of defenders on a number of occasions. Other times, he’s been unable to. Mourinho has improved a great deal at United, but the most notable difference is the defensive success of the Reds.
Even with Sergio Romero and Joel Pereira in goal, De Gea’s two understudies, United have been impressive.
