Javier Mascherano has praised Alex Iwobi after the Arsenal man bagged a brace for Nigeria in their 4-2 win over Argentina (via Own Goal Nigeria).
The international break may be an irritation to some but for others, it’s a unique chance to see players in different environments.
It’s always good for Arsenal fans to see their team’s players shining for their countries which is exactly what Alex Iwobi did on Tuesday night.
The midfielder isn’t getting much time on the pitch at the Emirates but for his country, Nigeria, he’s a key player.
The 21-year-old bagged two goals for his team as they beat Argentina 4-2. The Arsenal man’s second involved a wonderful piece of skill to skip past Argentina’s Javier Mascherano and now, the FC Barcelona man has spoken about Iwobi’s performance.
“He (Iwobi) took his goals really well,” Mascherano said. “Maybe we should have defended better but the quality of the second strike from the edge of the box makes me think otherwise.
“We dominated the first half but they scored from their only shot on target before the half-time break. Their second goal was well taken by the Arsenal lad (Iwobi) then the fourth goal by the same player killed the game off.
“It’s better to lose this way before we get to the World Cup, and the Nigerian team are obviously one of the most physical sides we have faced in a while.
“Congratulations to Nigeria they deserve to win.”
Iwobi was impressive on the night and is really showing his quality for his country. Hopefully, this can be transferred to his domestic form and we can see more of this clearly talented player.
