Chris Smalling has admitted he would fear playing against Manchester United’s current frontline as a defender.
With the return of Zlatan Ibrahimovic from a long-term injury on Saturday evening as Man United beat Newcastle United 4-1, the Reds’ attack is looking frighteningly good.
Romelu Lukaku has 12 goals so far this season in all competitions, while he’s been complimented throughout the campaign by the young duo of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.
Though the two young forwards have rarely played together, they did on Saturday, before Martial was subbed off for Ibrahimovic.
“I think it would strike fear into myself if I was playing against them, and it strikes fear into most teams,” Smalling said.
“Obviously we’ve got Paul [Pogba] back too, who’s a very attacking midfielder, and along with Ibra and all those other names it just gives us so many options.
“No matter what game it is, no matter what competition it is, we’ve got a front three or four who can cause the opposition problems.
“So if we keep it tight at the back, more often that not, we’re going to win the game.”
Saturday’s starting line-up was one that United fans could look at and be excited by. The talent of the three starting forwards, Lukaku, Martial and Rashford, plus the creativity and brilliance of Paul Pogba and Juan Mata, as well as Nemanja Matic in midfield, was fantastic.
