Manchester United legends Roy Keane and Gary Neville have failed to see eye to eye on whether or not the club can challenge the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City for the Premier League title.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer oversaw a massive 6-2 win over Leeds United and the result meant his side jumped into third with a game in hand.
Should United win that game in hand they would subsequently move within two points of current league leaders Liverpool; a feat that seemed impossible just last month or so.
Solskjaer has managed to get his players to find some consistency in the league and that has resulted in them climbing up the table faster than anticipated.
At one point the legendary Norwegian’s job seemed to be on the line but it’s safe to say that’s no longer the case, at least for the time being.
According to Sky Sports, Keane said: “I think over the last few months they’ve been heavily criticised, particularly over the home record.
“I’ve been quite critical of the back four, the goalkeeper, questioning where this team is going, but the name of this game is proving people wrong.
“Maybe, just maybe, this group of players can do that. They’ve been winning games, and that’s all you can do. United are in a great position considering how slow they were out of the blocks.
“If United can get their house in order at home, there’s no reason why United can’t stay up there.
“I think Liverpool are still the best, but there’s no reason why United should be fancying their chances in terms of pushing Liverpool.
“Manchester United were excellent [vs Leeds]. What Leeds left for United was space. We always thought Leeds were there for the taking.
“It’s a big boost for United. Liverpool are still the strongest, but United could be the best of the rest.”
And in comparison, Neville said: “For Manchester United it was about closing the gap, no one ever thought they would be in a position to go so close.
“They’re going to go second in the league if they can close that gap. It doesn’t feel like Manchester United have played like that.
“There has been talk of the manager’s job, going out of Europe was a big problem, the performances at times have been horrible.
“You just watch them and think there isn’t a team emerging there who can challenge for the title. My gut feeling is to still say I don’t think Manchester United are going to win the league.”
Reading Keane and Neville’s comments is a little strange given how they would normally be attributed to each other with the former the typically cynical one and the latter the optimist.
Nonetheless, there’s truth in both their opinions, and it’s been such a turbulent season that either one of them could be proven right in the long-term.
If Solskjaer can keep the consistency going and keep his starting XI fit then there’s no reason why they can’t go the distance.
However, a few injuries to key players or the squad suddenly runs out of steam and United could quickly go tumbling down the table.
