The completion of Amad Diallo’s move to Manchester United looks now set to go ahead after the player was given his Italian passport this week.
United signed the 18-year-old on deadline day for a €25 million (£22.6m) fee plus up to €15 million (£13.6m) in bonuses, making him one of the world’s most expensive teenagers despite having only played a few minutes of senior football for Atalanta.
The Ivorian’s work permit issue was known when the Red Devils captured his signature, with the hope always being that the move could be completed in January.
This now looks to be the case and Diallo is expected to fly to Manchester in the new year to complete his move, reports Fabrizio Romano for The Guardian.
‘He and United have now applied for a Governing Body Endorsement (GBE) certificate from the FA,’ adds The Times’ Paul Hirst.
‘If, as expected, Diallo is given a GBE he will then apply for a work permit from the Home Office, which is likely to be granted.
‘The process will take some time so United do not expect the winger to arrive on January 1. Instead it is thought that he will join later next month.
‘When Diallo does arrive he will not have to quarantine because he is already in an elite sports bubble at Atalanta.’
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to evaluate Diallo in training when he does finally arrive and judge whether he thinks he is ready to be thrown into first team action or whether, like fellow new signing Facu Pellistri, he will be given time to acclimatise in the Under 23 side.
Edinson Cavani has made quite an impact since his deadline day arrival at Old Trafford, but how much do you know about our other South American players, past and present? Take our quiz below to find out!
