4-4-2 diamond: United will unleash this deadly line-up against Villa

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reported no new injury problems ahead of tomorrow’s Premier League tie with Aston Villa and has a strong squad from which to choose.

There may be some tired legs after Tuesday’s hard-fought 1-0 victory over Wolves and with the Carabao Cup semi-final against Manchester City just around the corner, the manager may feel the need to freshen up a little, although he will not want to interrupt the side’s rhythm with too many changes.

Another try with the 4-4-2 diamond looks possible. This will sacrifice an out-and-out forward player in favour of an extra midfielder, but could be ideal against Villa’s 4-2-3-1. An extra central midfielder could also help cut the supply off to Villa’s star man, Jack Grealish, in the number 10 position.

The manager has not stated whether Victor Lindelof has recovered from his back injury so the defence could retain Eric Bailly, with Shaw coming back in for Alex Telles, who was subbed at half time against Wolves.

Scott McTominay and Fred are in line for a recall having been rested against Wolves and Bruno Fernandes would almost certainly occupy the tip of the diamond. This leaves one other midfield slot, which could see a rare start for Donny van de Beek, who has more of the box-to-box energy that will serve the formation well than the more static Paul Pogba.

Up front, following the news of Edinson Cavani’s three-match ban, Anthony Martial will almost certainly be recalled having been rested against Wolves. As Marcus Rashford is always one of the boss’s first names on the teamsheet, it leaves Mason Greenwood to be the one who will probably drop back to the bench.

This, then, is our predicted line-up for the Red Devils’ first match of 2021:

Solskjaer not concerned that players are angry with him

Alex Telles is available for Manchester United’s Premier League game against Aston Villa tomorrow and was not withdrawn against Wolves due to injury.

The left-back was taken off at half time in Tuesday’s game and replaced with Luke Shaw, but in today’s pre-match press conference for tomorrow’s game against Aston Villa, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed that the switch was tactical.

‘No, Alex is fine,’ the boss said.

‘That was just a tactical decision we made, a change a little bit to the set-up. We have a strong squad.

‘I think, against Wolverhampton, it was about getting in behind them and down the sides of them. We didn’t do that enough which is why I was up and agitated a couple of times.

‘It’s a tactical way of getting in behind teams, of course. And I think all of our players have the possibility and capability of improving, which is a good thing about this group. It’s a still young and developing one.’

The manager also confirmed that he will continue to rotate Telles and Shaw along with the rest of the squad.

‘We’ve rotated a lot and we have not really found a settled XI this season but I don’t think it’s about that anyway this season,’ he said.

‘It’s going to be about a squad of 25 to 26 players and I think, towards the end of the season, that will help us. It has to be done this way.

‘When you leave out Scott and Fred, it’s not easy because they deserve to play every game. But Nemanja and Paul played so well against Everton that I wanted that midfield against Wolves.

‘I remember also the times you feel you deserve to play and you are left out. That is part of being at Manchester United.

‘We have top players everywhere and we know that, throughout the season, if you are going to win everything, you have to contribute.

‘The players will have to be angry with me until the next time they play because, believe you me, they are not happy when I tell them they are starting on the bench.’

Why United's expected January signing will transform Solskjaer's side

There has been a lot of speculation recently linking Manchester United with a new right-back and one name that is being consistently reported is Norwich City’s Max Aarons.

The Mail claims that United will try for the 20-year-old in January, although transfer guru Fabrizio Romano believes that he is not yet close to joining the club.

But what would Aarons bring to United that current right-back, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, does not?

An interesting analysis by The Athletic’s Tom Worville, in association with Smarter Scout software, shows the far more attacking style of the Norwich man.

As expected, the blue area of the chart shows Aarons as being far more attacking than Wan-Bissaka. A shot volume of 70 vs. 24 and expected goals per ball progression of 77 vs. 12 show a dramatic improvement.

Aarons looks better than Wan-Bissaka within the green ball retention part of the chart as well, with incredibly impressive figures for ball retention ability, link-up play volume and carry and dribble volume. Wan-Bissaka’s figures in these areas are not bad, but Aarons’ are exemplary.
However, all that progressive play comes at a cost and the red area of the chart shows where Wan-Bissaka is stronger. Defending intensity of 99 vs only 21 from Aarons is a significant advantage.

It should be noted of course that Wan-Bissaka’s figures are based on competing in the Premier League and Champions League whereas Aarons’ are based on the Championship, although some figures have been ‘adjusted for Premier League standard’.

It should also be noted that Wan-Bissaka has not been at his best in 2020/21 and comparison with last season’s figures would probably cast him in a much better light.

Nonetheless, few would argue that the former Crystal Palace man’s strengths do lie in defence rather than attack and Aarons would provide a very different option for United in games when breaking down a stubborn opposition defence is the order of the day.

Tactically inadequate?: A look into Solskjaer's biggest criticism

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has had his fair share of critics and one of their biggest arguments is that he’s not good enough as a manager.

Often what they’re referring to is his supposed lack of knowledge or tactics and how he’s outwitted more than he outwits opposing managers.

However, the statistics below suggest that’s far from the truth and it proves Solskjaer deserves more credit than most give him.

United currently sit in second place with a game in hand on leaders and rivals Liverpool and it’s a credit to him he’s managed to lead the team there after the poor start to the season.

Whether or not he can take this team to the promised land remains to be seen but he’s certainly done a good job so far.

Given the statistics above, Solskjaer isn’t just performing well in his role but he’s also shown he’s tactically as good as any in the league.

The hope is he can continue to grow and begin to dominate the league in the way many at United want to see.

The competition for Solskjaer’s role has certainly decreased of late and so he should feel safer in his position as manager.

Edinson Cavani has made quite an impact since his deadline day arrival at Old Trafford, but how much do you know about our other South American players, past and present? Take our quiz below to find out!

Man United star breaks remarkable record with performance over Wolves

Manchester United star Marcus Rashford has written himself into the history books again following his performance vs Wolves.

The young Englishman popped up with the goods at the perfect time to hand his side the all-important three points, sending the team into second place.

United struggled to take apart Wolves’ stubborn defence but Rashford netted the crucial winner in the dying embers of the match.

Fans celebrated the victory wildly because it was normally the type of match that would end in a draw in the past.

Bruno Fernandes supplied the assist and there were better performers elsewhere but Rashford’s goal put him right into the history books.

Rashford’s proven himself as a crucial player to Manchester United and the statistic above will go some way in aiding that argument.

The academy graduate will hopefully still have a long career at Old Trafford so it wouldn’t surprise anyone if he breaks more records.

Coming in at such crucial moments already for United at such a young age is remarkably encouraging, even if he doesn’t end up being a top goalscorer.

Rashford’s already reached some important milestones as well and the club will need him to continue to go from strength to strength if they are to enjoy long-term success.

Solskjaer explains how his squad took a major step forward

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has explained why last night’s match with Wolves was a big step forward for his squad.

The legendary Norwegian has managed to turn the tide of late and his job now looks more secure now than it has down all season long.

United’s campaign didn’t get off to the best of starts and it seemed as though Solskjaer was set to lose his job by the time the festive period came around.

With the new year just around the corner now, the former Molde man is in a much stronger position with their even being talk that the club will support him over the next couple of transfer windows and aren’t considering switching managers.

The Red Devils overcame a stubborn Wolves side to claim all three points to send themselves to second in the Premier League table.

Solskjaer has clearly refused to get drawn into title talk and rightfully so as even recent history shows it’s very easy to see the second half of the season fall apart.

His job is to keep his player grounded and keep on grinding out results and it’s something he has done well.

Manchester United fans felt the win over Wolves was almost symbolic as it was a win that their side would typically fail to get in the past.

It was also because it happened at a time when their rivals were dropping points so it made it all the more crucial.

Sensational: The best statistic to come out after win over Wolves

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will feel validated following his side’s win over Wolves and for more than just one reason.

The legendary Norwegian oversaw his side secure a crucial and dramatic victory as they climbed to second in the Premier League table.

United and Solskjaer have had their fair share of critics this season but it’s safe to say those critics have been a little quieter than usual of late.

The former Molde man has managed to turn around their poor early season form with his players putting together a successful and respectable run of matches since.

Suddenly now the talk is about a possible title challenge from the Red Devils and although Solskjaer is hesitant to get involved in such talk, the statistics certainly support him.

It’s no coincidence that Bruno Fernandes also arrived towards the end of January as he has been the catalyst for the club’s fortunes.

Manchester United have been a different beast entirely with the Portuguese magician in it and he will be crucial to any future successes.

Solskjaer will now be aiming for more than just collecting points but also collecting the right points against the right teams if silverware is to be won.

Man United fans will love this video of Bruno during Wolves win

Manchester United fans already hold Bruno Fernandes dear to their hearts but they’ll love him even more after a video emerged in the aftermath of the narrow win over Wolves.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men seemed to be dragging their heels to yet another bore draw and had that happened, supporters would’ve been thoroughly disappointed.

United’s win sees them rise to second place in the league table and had they gotten just a point, it just wouldn’t have been the same.

Thankfully Marcus Rashford stepped up at the death to hand his side all three points and Bruno couldn’t help his celebrations.

It was the Portuguese magician who assisted his English teammate and was once again crucial to another Red Devils’ win.

It’s safe to say Bruno didn’t have the best of games vs Wolves but even when he puts in a poor shift he manages to come up with the goods for Manchester United.

It’s not just evidence of a good player but also evidence of how talismanic he is for Solskjaer’s side.

If United hope to find themselves in a good position at the end of the season they will need to keep Bruno fit and firing for as long as possible as it’s clear they’re a different team when he’s in the starting XI.

Rashford reveals genius decision he made before scoring winner vs Wolves

Manchester United star Marcus Rashford has explained just how he looked to exploit Wolves after scoring the match-winning goal in the dying embers of the match.

The young Englishman was crucial in the victory, scoring in the 1-0 result to hand Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men all three points.

The win meant United climbed up to second in the Premier League table with a game in hand and Rashford led the way for his team.

Solskjaer’s stars couldn’t seem to find their way through a stubborn Wolves team who appeared set up to keep all their players behind the ball and settle for a point.

However, Rashford had other plans and it seems as though he figured something out that helped him get the winner.

What Rashford did was brilliant insight and a fantastic way to break through a stubborn opponent but it’s also remarkably similar to a certain Manchester United legend.

Michael Carrick once revealed in his book how Ryan Giggs would occasionally turn his opposing full-back into knots in order to tire out their legs before doing something truly dangerous.

Rashford didn’t play on Rayan Ait-Nouri’s flank for long but he made sure to hop on the opportunity to exploit him right away.

Not Bruno or Rashford: Man United fans celebrate star's crucial performance

Manchester United fans were fully appreciative of Eric Bailly after their side’s clean-sheet vs a dangerous Wolves side.

The Ivorian defender is often viewed as one of the best, if not the best, centre-back in the team but his inability to keep fit has often meant he hasn’t played.

Bailly’s proneness to injury is the only thing stopping him from having a successful career at United but he has managed to string together a couple of appearances.

This has led to fans’ reappreciating what he brings to the table and he shined brightest in the narrow 1-0 victory over Wolves.

Hopefully Bailly can kick on and remain available for selection but if that is to happen, it’s likely Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have to manage his minutes well.

Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire have been Solskjaer’s go-to partnership and that has largely had to do with the lack of options.

As good as Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe are, they aren’t fit enough regularly to truly challenge for a spot in the starting XI.

Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo are the other options but it’s safe to say their ships have sailed and Solskjaer will never consider them again for future matches.

Powerful and dominant: Two standout performances from United’s unsung heroes

Manchester United overcame a defiant Wolves defence this evening to win 1-0 in the last Premier League match of 2020. Here are our player ratings for the game:

(A score of 6 is around average.)

David de Gea 7 – A couple of good saves in the first half and excellent stop in the second even though it was later ruled offside.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka 6 – Worked hard going forward, but just doesn’t seem to have the natural instincts needed.

Eric Bailly 8 – Looked strong in defence. Nothing was going to get past him. Makes those around him look like better players.

Harry Maguire 7 – Gave away a few silly fouls in the first half but defended well in the second.

Alex Telles 6 – Looks reluctant to take chances and get forward as he did at Porto. Whether that is team instructions or settling in remains to be seen.

Nemanja Matic 8 – Comfortable on the ball, makes the game look so easy when on form like this.

Paul Pogba 7 – Didn’t impose himself on the game. Some nice passes but needs to make more forward runs. Got better toward the end once Rashford moved over to the right.

Mason Greenwood 7 – One of United’s better players in the first half. Brilliant pass to Bruno that should have led to a goal. Always seems to be the first to be subbed no matter how he plays.

Bruno Fernandes 7 – Not vintage Bruno but still produced the killer pass in the dying seconds to win the game. Phenomenal.

Marcus Rashford 7 – Too ponderous and predictable for the most part but got the winner, so we can’t complain.

Edinson Cavani 7 – Starved of service and battling three centre backs with little support.

Substitutes

Luke Shaw 7 – Looked more positive and aggressive than Telles.

Anthony Martial 7 – Looked reasonably lively.

Scott McTominay 6 – No time to make much of an impression.

15 goal involvements in 15 games: United's unstoppable force breaks through Wolves' defences

Whilst Manchester United’s winning goal against Wolves this evening seemed far from inevitable, the architects of it came as no surprise.

A brilliant pass by the Red Devils’ talisman Bruno Fernandes was tucked away by the superb Marcus Rashford, with the help of a deflection off a Wolves defender.

Fernandes’ assist means that he has been directly involved in 15 goals in his last 15 appearances for United, an amazing statistic.

He has also recorded 23 goal involvements in as many games this season.

Rashford is almost as prolific and has now registered 35 goal involvements since the start of last season.

The England international has 14 goals and eight assists in 24 games this term.

The two players have scored 27 goals between them so far in 2020/21.

Fernandes could have notched a goal himself in the first half when he hit an inch-perfect pass from Mason Greenwood straight at Wolves’ keeper Rui Patricio.

Rashford has also missed an earlier opportunity when he headed over the bar from close range.

But eventually the pair linked in the fourth minute of injury time to seal the three points and lift the Red Devils to second place in the table, just two points behind leaders Liverpool.

Next up in the Premier League is another home fixture against in-form Aston Villa on Friday before the big game at Anfield on January 17th.

Three things Man United need to do to beat Wolves

Manchester United host Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League at Old Trafford tonight knowing that a win will take them second in the table, just two points behind Liverpool.

Yet they also know that Wolves are particularly difficult to beat and in fact have become something of a bogey team since the Midlands club returned to the Premier League in 2018/19.

In that time, the two sides have met seven times, with Wolves winning two, United one and four ending in a draw.

So what do Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men need to change to get the three points tonight? The following are three key issues that the manager needs to resolve.

1. Set a more attacking formation

Wolves’ boss Nuno Espirito Santo has historically played with a back three although he has been mixing that up lately, including in their last game at home to Spurs. Given the success he has had against United with the formation, though, he will probably revert to the three, especially if Willy Boly returns to action.

United need to field an attack-heavy formation to provide the extra man against this formation. In their previous encounter – a 0-0 draw in February that saw Bruno Fernandes make his debut for the club – Fernandes played in the hole behind Anthony Martial, with Dan James and Juan Mata on the wings. The two previous encounters in the FA Cup third round also saw United struggle with a 4-2-3-1 formation although they scraped past their opponents in the replay.

The fact is that the Reds have managed just one goal in those last three outings against the Wolves back three so this formation needs to change. One of the two defensive midfielders needs to be sacrificed. A 4-4-2 diamond or 4-3-3 with two attack-minded CM’s such as Pogba and Van de Beek, with just one holding, should reap dividends.

2. Cut out the defensive errors

Even without Espirito Santo’s old strike force of Diogo Jota and Raul Jimenez, Wolves are dangerous going forward and will not park the bus against United. Given the Reds’ difficulty in scoring against this opponent in recent times it is vital that they tighten up at the back. United have let in two goals in three of their past four games and the last back line to keep a clean sheet was Henderson – Tuanzebe – Bailly – Maguire – Telles. Solkjaer has doggedly stuck with his favoured De Gea – Wan-Bissaka – Lindelof – Maguire – Shaw defence but at some point he has to accept that it is leaky and that he needs to find a different solution.

3. Stop wasting chances

United’s forwards, particularly Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, have been in excellent form of late but their finishing has not been as clinical as it should have been. In a game against a stingy defence it is all the more important to take the chances when they come along.

Solskjaer may be best served today by either dropping either Rashford or Martial or playing them both out wide and allowing a more consistent finisher such as Edinson Cavani or even Mason Greenwood to lead the line.
