Huge boost for Solskjaer as transfer target's price slashed by 45% - report

There is news this week on one of Manchester United’s top midfield targets that could have a significant impact on the club’s January transfer business.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is now blessed with a good roster of attack-minded options in the centre of the park, but the only specialist holding midfielder in the squad is Nemanja Matic, who is entering the twilight of his career at 32 years of age.

One player widely reported to be on Solskjaer’s shopping list to replace the Serbian is the gifted French prodigy Eduardo Camavinga.

Camavinga, who has played 55 games for French side Rennes despite only just turning 18 years of age, is one of the most sought-after youngsters in the game, with Real Madrid in particular being among the chasing pack.

Real see the Frenchman as a younger and cheaper option to compatriot and long-term target Paul Pogba, but their player’s popularity has not gone unnoticed at Rennes, who have been talking in terms of a €80 million (£71m) transfer fee – a heady figure for such a young player.

However, Camavinga has not started 2020/21 as well as he ended 2019/20 and has so far failed to reach agreement over a new contract at the French side.

He is also in the process of sacking his agent Moussa Sissoko, according to Rennes’ sporting director Flaurian Maurice.

With his contract expiring in June 2022, this has left Rennes scrambling and reports say they have now slashed the asking price down to just €45 million (£40m).

‘Camavinga’s father, who is also mulling over handling his son’s affairs himself, now has a host of top representatives lining up to offer their services to him, with the management companies run by super-agents Jonathan Barnett, Jorge Mendes, Pini Zahavi and Mino Raiola all in the shake-up,’ says AS.

‘Meanwhile, Sissoko is thought to be attempting to reach an agreement with a new club as soon as possible … in what could well be his final service to the player’.

It is believed that Sissoko is trying to get the deal with Real Madrid done, but los Blancos are being extremely cautious in the transfer market at the moment as they struggle to deal with the financial impact of Covid-19.

Their top transfer target is Kylian Mbappe and it is unlikely they would even shell out €45 million for Camavinga whilst trying to raise funds for the world’s most expensive player.

This could leave United in the box seat for an early Camavinga deal and an approach in January on or around that discounted fee might prove to be a shrewd piece of business for the Old Trafford side.

Injury update: Man United fans given hope over key star's fitness

Manchester United star David de Gea may have a shot at featuring vs PSG as his injury has not been deemed as serious just yet.

The Spanish goalkeeper couldn’t keep a clean-sheet in the dramatic 3-2 win over Southampton and ended up having to be substituted at the break.

De Gea crashed into the post while attempting to make a save in the first half and he seemed to shake it off initially before eventually succumbing to the injury.

Dean Henderson came on to make his Premier League debut for United and made a few smart stops to help keep United in the game.

Edinson Cavani’s introduction at half-time inspired a sensational comeback win that De Gea could unfortunately only watch from the stands.

Given how the first round of tests didn’t find anything conclusive then the hope is it means it can’t be anything serious.

Even if the second round finds something, it should be something minor that hopefully won’t keep him out for long.

It’s likely Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would want to select De Gea for the clash vs PSG but Henderson has played well whenever he’s been handed an opportunity so it isn’t a terrible downgrade at all.

"Best I've played against"- Man United star stunned by teammate after Southampton win

Manchester United star Harry Maguire appeared to be in awe of Edinson Cavani following his match-winning performance vs Southampton.

The former PSG man came on at the break to brilliantly lead his side to a sensational comeback win away from home.

United were 2-0 down at half-time but came out in the second half with all guns blazing to dramatically secure a 3-2 win thanks to Cavani’s brace and an assist.

Maguire and his teammates couldn’t keep a clean-sheet so it was thanks to the experienced Uruguayan that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and co walked away with a win.

The English centre-back has trained alongside his fair share of quality attackers but it’s Cavani who has impressed him the most.

Perhaps the most notable striker Maguire has trained with is his former colleague Jamie Vardy who is known for being notoriously relentless.

The pacy forward is always looking to make runs in behind and so his movement is dangerous in its own right.

Cavani is the one who gets the praise, however, and it might have to do with how he is better timed at what he does than perhaps Vardy is.

Against Southampton, he showed everyone just how well he sniffs out where the best place is to be and from those positions, he managed to grab a quickfire brace.

Must start vs PSG: The Man United star who topped stunning statistic vs Southampton

Manchester United star Nemanja Matic has perhaps not received as much praise as he should have for his role in the superb victory over Southampton.

The experienced Serbian was thrown back into the starting XI tasked with protecting his defence in a 4-4-2 diamond formation.

United found themselves 2-0 down at the break after some questionable defensive errors but roared back in the second half to complete a remarkable 3-2 comeback victory inspired by Edinson Cavani.

The talented Uruguayan deservedly made all the headlines but Matic played a crucial role in ensuring the three points too.

The former Chelsea man has been overlooked a little with Fred and Scott McTominay often chosen ahead of him but perhaps Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will reconsider altering his plans for future fixtures.

It’s remarkably encouraging to see him top the charts in these defensive aspects of the game, particularly as he was the sole defensive-midfielder in the side and it was essentially his main task.

However, what’s arguably the most stunning of the stats is the sheer amount of recoveries he’s made as 15 is a ridiculously high number.

There will be question marks over Matic and the squad’s first-half performance but there’s no doubt he, as well as his teammates, came out firing in the second-half.

'Class is class' - Many Chelsea fans hail 'terminator' who won 7 duels and 4 tackles v Spurs

Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic has earned the acclaim of a host of Blues fans after his impressive performance in Sunday’s London derby against Tottenham at Stamford Bridge.

Despite the match ending in a 0-0 stalemate, the 26-year-old Croatian produced a stellar showing in the heart of the midfield, dictating almost everything positive for Frank Lampard’s side. He ended the match with four successful tackles and won seven of his nine duels, along with completing 59 of his 62 passes, as per Sofascore.

Kovacic has come back from the wilderness somewhat in recent weeks, having been forced to watch on in the early part of the campaign as Jorginho and N’Golo Kante occupied the dual midfield anchor role.

However, the Croatia international has now played back-to-back 90 minutes for Chelsea, his first two of the season – a testament to his form. The man signed from Real Madrid has seemingly ousted Jorginho as first in line to play alongside Kante.

Many Blues fans voted Kovacic as their Man of the Match on Twitter and had plenty of praise for their driving midfielder, who one fan hailed as a “terminator”…

Positive injury news for Chelsea as Stamford Bridge ace provides encouraging update

Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell delivered a positive update over his injury situation following the Blues’ goalless draw with Tottenham on Sunday.

The left-back, who signed from Leicester City in the summer, suffered an ankle problem during the top-of-the-table clash when he seemed to twist his right foot awkwardly during a challenge.

Chilwell was able to continue after some treatment but seemed to hobble away from the incident, leading to concern that the 23-year-old could face a spell on the sidelines.

However, the marauding full-back spoke to the club’s official website after the clash and delivered this positive verdict: ”I was desperate to carry on and thankfully I ran it off, It’s fine now so I’m just looking forward to recovering and hopefully playing again in midweek.”

This will come as music to the ears of Frank Lampard, who has seen the England defender make a positive impact on his side after shrugging off some early-season injury woes.

Chilwell has played a major part in the transformation in the Blues’ defensive fortunes, as well as scoring twice and setting up two goals in his first seven Premier League appearances this season.

READ CHELSEA VERDICT

Chelsea face Sevilla on Wednesday night in the Champions League having already qualified for the knockout stages.

Despite feeling no-ill effects from his latest potential injury setback, Lampard must be tempted to rest his first-choice left-back in a game which, aside from potentially sealing top spot in the group, doesn’t have a great deal riding on it.

As the Blues set their sights on a prolonged title challenge, not risking star players unnecessarily could become pivotal as this gruelling season rolls on.

Cheeky: Rio Ferdinand has brilliant response to Cavani's match-winning performance

Manchester United great Rio Ferdinand reminded everyone of his ability to see the potential in Edinson Cavani even before news broke over a transfer.

The experienced Uruguayan rightfully gained plenty of plaudits for his match-winning performance vs Southampton.

United found themselves 2-0 down at the break and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reacted by bringing Cavani on for the second half.

It’s safe to say the former PSG man had the desired effect after scoring a brace and assisting the third in a sensational 3-2 victory.

Had it not been for Cavani then the Red Devils may never have secured their comeback win and Solskjaer’s position as manager may have been under serious threat again.

The Mirror article that Ferdinand is referencing can be seen here and it mentions how he reached out to Cavani to see if he’d be interested in signing for Manchester United long before there was any desire from the club.

Fans have been impressed with the powerful striker since he’s joined as it’s clear to see he offers something different to the club’s current options.

Neither Marcus Rashford nor Anthony Martial would’ve made the kind of runs he did that saw him score his brace in crucial moments of the game.

United have had some world class goalkeepers over the years and some entertaining ones too. Take our quiz below to find out how much you know about United’s number 1’s, past and present.

Midfield ace earns a 9, forward must settle for 6 - Chelsea player ratings v Spurs [Opinion]

Chelsea could perhaps count themselves a little unfortunate not to come away with all three points from Sunday afternoon’s north London derby against Tottenham.

The Blues missed the chance to go top of the Premier League at Stamford Bridge as the match ended goalless – despite Frank Lampard‘s side having the more concerted forays into the opposition half.

Whilst most of the openings could only be classified as half-chances, Lampard will likely have been left frustrated by the lack of clinical opportunities created by his team despite dictating much of the play.

Substitute Olivier Giroud almost became the late hero for the second time in a week when the Frenchman was presented with a sight of goal late on, but his effort failed to get the desired loft or direction to beat Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

The point means Chelsea stay third and are two points behind Spurs, who returned to the summit as a result.

Solskjaer reveals what Man United have missed since Lukaku left for Inter

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has hinted fans may see plenty more of Edinson Cavani after his match-winning performance vs Southampton.

Fans were thoroughly pleased by the experienced Uruguayan’s impact as he managed to score twice and assist a teammate in the 3-2 win.

United found themselves trailing at the break by two goals and Cavani was brought on in the second half to great effect.

Solskjaer’s decision to haul off Mason Greenwood at half-time for the former PSG man proved to be the correct call and supporters are calling for him to start more often.

Cavani was signed on deadline day on a free transfer and he appears to have settled in better than some had expected.

Solskjaer would go on to say Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial are a different type of striker to that so it’s not like fans will never see them lead the line.

However, it’s clear Cavani is head and shoulders above both in terms of being a pure striker with ridiculous movement on the pitch.

His instinct as a forward is more refined and he’s better at sniffing out danger than his teammates.

At the same time, Cavani is also capable of moving out wide to make room for onrushing teammates and he’s good at dropping deep and linking play too.

'The quiet hero'- Man United fans rave about midfielder's sensational performance vs Southampton

Manchester United fans couldn’t get enough of Donny van de Beek following his performance vs Southampton in what was a rollercoaster of a win.

The young Dutchman was handed his first start in the Premier League for the season, with supporters long calling for him to get more minutes.

Van de Beek has been a bench warmer for the most part this campaign as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had planned to integrate him into the starting XI slowly.

However, the former Ajax star has been bright with whatever cameos he’s featured in and forced his way into the lineup for the Southampton clash after impressing mid-week vs Istanbul Basaksehir.

Van de Beek rewarded Solskjaer’s faith by putting in another fine display in the sensational 3-2 comeback win vs the Saints.

Edinson Cavani naturally stole the show after scoring a brace and assisting a goal as well but Van de Beek’s silky work didn’t go unnoticed by the fans.

United headed into the break trailing by two goals but it was thanks to the experienced Uruguayan that they managed to turn it around in the second half.

Van de Beek featured in a diamond formation and yet looked just as comfortable as he did in Solskjaer’s 4-2-3-1 in midweek vs Istanbul Basaksehir and it’s a credit to his brilliant versatility.

United have had some world class goalkeepers over the years and some entertaining ones too. Take our quiz below to find out how much you know about United’s number 1’s, past and present.

Breaking records: The stunning statistics behind United's brilliant win over Southampton

Manchester United managed to secure a superb comeback victory vs Southampton on Sunday afternoon and they did so by breaking records.

Edinson Cavani was instrumental in the win, scoring two goals and assisting another in the sensational 3-2 win.

United were trailing 2-0 at half-time and the experienced Uruguayan managed to do all that damage in just 45 minutes as he was only brought on for the second half.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was definitely pleased with the three points and the fight in his players to force a win from seemingly nowhere.

The Red Devils’ form has improved as the season has gone on but supporters are only cautiously optimistic as a disaster or poor performance always seems to be around the corner.

It’s been well documented how brilliant Manchester United’s away form has been this season but many are hoping to see an improvement on the home front.

Solskjaer’s men take on PSG at home next and the hope will be they can get some form of a result in order to secure qualification out of the group stages of the Champions League.

United have so far enjoyed their return to Europe’s top cup competition but poor results vs PSG and RB Leipzig could threaten to end all the positivity.

'Broke the 7 curse'- Man United fans laud praise on sensational match-winner

Manchester United star Edinson Cavani left fans breathless after his talismanic performance vs Southampton in what was a brilliant win.

The experienced Uruguayan scored twice and assisted once in the 3-2 victory despite coming on at half-time and certainly impressed supporters.

United seemed dead and buried after heading in at the break trailing by two goals but they managed to secure the sensational comeback win thanks to Cavani.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opted to bring him onto the field in the hopes it would inspire the team to three points and it proved to be the right call.

Mason Greenwood was the man sacrificed but Cavani got what needed to be done sorted and handed his team a brilliant win.

Cavani’s sensational movement was key in his performance as he seemed to know exactly where the ball was going to end up.

In fact the former PSG man did so well in that regard that he had fans convinced Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial cannot be considered strikers because they don’t do the same.

The two young forwards lack the same ability to sniff where danger is and Cavani gave them a masterclass in regards to that.

It’s safe to say Martial may struggle to win his spot back as the club’s leading striker when he recovers from his illness.

Fans' Player Ratings: Surprise scores for three players, massive props for Cavani

Manchester United fans on The United Peoples TV Discord server have been awarding their player ratings for the side’s 3-2 win against Southampton this afternoon. Here is a selection of some of their scores:

(A score of 6 is around average.)

David de Gea 4 – Didn’t command his defence for the goals and spilled one that could’ve been the third (posted by Stevie G’s Red Card)

Aaron Wan-Bissaka 7 – Didn’t contribute much today with his slide tackles and neither did he do it with going forward (posted by Red Patron)

Victor Lindelof 7.5 – Good game from him, won nearly every take on, and good on headers for once. Seems to be getting some confidence in the air finally (posted by Cal)

Harry Maguire 6 – You wouldn’t think he’s the captain if if he didn’t have the armband. Cut off Southampton’s attacks today though (posted by MQ)

Alex Telles 8 – The only one who provided the crosses and and long balls in in the first half. Too sad that our forwards couldn’t use those chances well in the first half (posted by Red Patron)

Nemanja Matic 7 – Cleaned up so well in midfield today (posted by MQ)

Fred 7 – Tackling king, really good breaking up play, and decent passing from him. He’s really developing into a good DCM and just needs to work on his hold up play (posted by Cal)

Donny van de Beek 8 – The unsung hero of the match today. Provided the accuracy in passing which we had lacked previously. Also helped the defenders with his slide tackles (posted by Red Patron)

Bruno Fernandes 6 – Not the best game, but an average game for him is a goal and an assist. Was in the middle of everything good for United (posted by MQ)

Marcus Rashford 6 – Was poor during the first half. Was selfish a lot but we can’t blame him. Assist. (posted by Mohammed-MUFC)

Mason Greenwood 5 – Should’ve at least scored. Wasn’t up to his best. Not more to say but he needs to build confidence again (posted by Mohammed-MUFC)

Substitutes

Dean Henderson 7 – Didn’t have much to do but looked much safer than DDG (posted by Stevie G’s Red Card)

Edinson Cavani 10 – Perfect super sub 2 goals and an assist. What more can you want, and won it for us in Fergie Time. “Panic signing” they said, “Past his prime” they said. ABSOLUTE MINT (posted by Mitz123)

Brandon Williams 5 – Only on for a few minutess. (posted by Mohammed-MUFC)

Sensational: Cavani's match-winning statistics after tearing apart Southampton

Manchester United star Edinson Cavani’s role in the comeback win vs Southampton couldn’t be overstated and the statistics suggest he’s fully deserving of his performance and result.

The experienced Uruguayan came on at half-time for Mason Greenwood and his influence was absolutely sensational.

Cavani was instrumental in the win, grabbing an assist and two goals as United overcame Southampton 3-2 having been trailing 2-0 at half-time.

Huge question marks were being asked of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the break and given how he hauled Greenwood off, some felt he’d lost the plot.

In the end it proved to be the right call and what may have essentially saved his job and he has Cavani to thank for that.

When Cavani signed as a free agent on deadline day, many questioned whether it was the right decision given his age and injury record.

Given how he was available to sign all summer long but only joined at the last minute, there were those who wondered if Solskjaer even wanted him.

It’s safe to say even if he didn’t want Cavani before, he does want him now after what was a sensational 45 minutes.

The talented striker will now cast his eyes on facing his former side PSG in the Champions League in the midweek fixture.

'Don't see the point in sticking with him': fans have had enough of United star

David de Gea was substituted at half-time as Manchester United overcame a 2-0 deficit to beat Southampton 3-2 at St Mary’s.

There was a great deal of debate about whether De Gea shared any of the blame for either of Southampton’s goals, but he looked shaky between the sticks and fumbled an easy save that could have led to a third for the Saints.

The majority of fans voicing their opinions on social media seemed pleased that manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer replaced the Spaniard at the interval, although this turned out to be due to injury.

‘Manchester United winning against a tin-top Southampton shouldn’t deviate our attention from the fact that De Gea has conceded 16 goals in 9 premier league games,’ one fan said.

‘The only takeaway I have from this game is why does De Gea still start?’ said another.

Other comments included:

‘I felt more confident with Dean Henderson in goal than De Gea. Made a few stops and his urgency with his distribution was great. Think he deserves his chance now.’

‘De Gea gets substituted and this happens.’

‘There’s no real benefit in starting De Gea so I don’t see the point in sticking with him. How does it help us? Deano could be our keeper for the next decade.’

‘De Gea is sitting on massive wages whilst a young local lad is in better form and arguably deserves to take his spot.’

The extent of De Gea’s injury remains to be seen but if he is fit to face PSG on Wednesday evening, Solskjaer will have a difficult selection decision to make.

Feeling the heat?: Today's massive decision will show if Solskjaer is under pressure

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team selection for today’s Premier League game against Southampton could tell us a great deal about the Manchester United manager’s priorities for the season and how safe he feels in his job.

United have been struggling in the Premier League this term and lie 13th in the table. Three points therefore seem vital, as does putting out a strong side against the high-flying Saints, who have won five and drawn two of their last seven games.

But Solskjaer will also have one eye on Wednesday’s home Champions League tie against PSG.

A point would almost certainly put United through to the round of 16 and an £8.5 million bonus payment. Assuming RB Leipzig and PSG beat Istanbul Basaksehir in their remaining ties, a loss would leave the Red Devils having to get a point in Germany the following Tuesday – not an easy task despite their convincing win over Julian Nagelsmann’s men in the home leg.

Decisions over players who have ongoing fitness niggles will be particularly crucial. Does Solskjaer risk Victor Lindelof (back) today, knowing that his most likely deputy, Axel Tuanzebe, is suspended for Wednesday’s game? Will Marcus Rashford (shoulder) be rested today so he is fit to face the side he has put to the sword in their previous two encounters?

Edinson Cavani impressed in Tuesday’s victory over Basaksehir, but is the 33-year-old fit enough to play three games in eight days? If not, Solskjaer will have to choose which game is more important.

Solskjaer may also need to manage his central midfielders well as Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba are injured and it is unclear as to whether they will be available for the PSG game or not. Nemanja Matic may struggle to play two games in three days and Bruno Fernandes is approaching 1,000 minutes of football already this season.

If the manager’s top priority is the Premier League or if he is concerned about his future, today’s line-up is likely to include Lindelof, Rashford, Cavani, Fernandes and Matic. If the Champions League tie is more important to him,or he feels his position is safe, most if not all of them could be rested.

Three Man United transfer stories that are almost certainly bogus

Three transfer stories doing the rounds at the moment and involving Manchester United are almost certainly being generated by the respective players’ agents or selling clubs trying to reduce their wage bill.

First, reports linking the Red Devils with a January move for Inter Milan’s Christian Eriksen are being peddled in the Italian media, but it seems highly unlikely that there will be any interest from United at this stage.

Aside from the fact that Eriksen already declined a move to Old Trafford – not a deal breaker but not something that encourages the club to return for a player – with Donny van de Beek having joined Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba on the attacking midfield roster, United simply do not require a fourth playmaker.

Even if Pogba were to leave, it would not be a priority position.

The ‘Eriksen back to the Premier League’ stories probably originate from Inter themselves, as the player has struggled to adapt to the Italian game, having not registered a single goal or assist in nine outings for the Nerazzurri.

Another story that is probably being pushed out by the selling club is that United may go back in for Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele in January.

The Red Devils tried to sign the Frenchman on loan this summer but the move did not come about because Barça were keen to sell in order to raise funds to strengthen in other areas. There were also reports that the player himself did not want to leave Spain.

The latest reports from the Spanish press would appear to be another attempt by the Blaugrana to tempt United into acting, perhaps believing that the Reds might be more persuaded to make a permanent deal having seen the player avoid injury for a few months – his injury record was their main reason in the summer for wanting a loan only.

This one is not impossible, but with Atalanta’s right-wing prodigy Amad Diallo arriving in January it seems far more likely that United will wait until June, when they could make another attempt to sign their preferred target of Jadon Sancho before returning for Dembele.

The third story is one that has been rumbling around for a few weeks involving Sporting Lisbon’s young left-back, Nuno Mendes.

Whilst the 18-year-old is an undoubted talent, it seems unthinkable that United would be willing to trigger his £40 million release clause having only just bought Alex Telles, with Luke Shaw and Brandon Williams also available. The Reds also recently signed a highly talented prospect from Real Madrid, 17-year-old Alvaro Fernandez, in that position.

In this case, United’s name is probably being used by Mendes’ agent to push Sporting into offering the young star an improved contract.

Manchester United will always be used as leverage in the football transfer market. This in part is because stories are eagerly picked up and spread by the media, who know there is more interest in the club than in any other.

Solskjaer breaks silence about Bruno Fernandes 'giving out rollockings'

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has spoken about midfielder Bruno Fernandes’ tendency to shout at his teammates.

Fernandes joined the Red Devils in January and his infectious desire and determination to win instantly transformed an ailing United side into top four contenders.

But on occasion the Portuguese international’s passion spills over into rage and there have been some heated spats both on and off the pitch with his teammates.

In August during the Europa League semi-final defeat to Sevilla, Bruno had a heated on-pitch argument with teammate Victor Lindelof.

And at the beginning of October, Fernandes was substituted at half-time as United crashed to a humiliating 6-1 home defeat to Spurs amidst rumours that he was so angry with his teammates in the dressing room that he had to be separated from the group – a story, it should be said, that the player himself denied.

When asked on Friday about the player’s vocal outbursts, Solskjaer clearly suggested that he saw them as a positive and important part of the team’s character.

‘I’ve been in a team and I like a team where it is not just the manager or the coaches who shout,’ the boss said.

‘I want players to take responsibility and put other players into their place at times when that is necessary because they’re out there fighting for one cause and that is for the team to win.

‘I think once in a while you just have to take a rollocking. Not that Bruno is just giving out rollockings, he is also instructing, and I think we can all learn from his mentality and mindset.
‘If it is 2-0, he wants 3-0. If it is 4-0, he wants 5-0. He always wants to improve and for the team to improve.’

It is a mentality that is arguably taking some time to transmit itself to the rest of the team. ‘We all need to step up and improve. Especially in difficult times — and Bruno has done that,’ Solskjaer said.

The fact remains that Fernandes has been involved in 55.8% of United’s goals since he joined the club, a figure that The Times’ Jonathan Northcroft believes indicates that United are a one-man team.

‘Cristiano Giaretta, the Watford sporting director, who discovered Fernandes for the Italian side Novara explained the player’s mentality as wanting “to be not one of the best, but the best”, and also to “transmit his confidence to team-mates”,’ Northcroft writes.

‘He must feel he is only halfway there at Old Trafford. He has definitely become United’s best but what about his colleagues?

‘Helping them to grow is proving trickier than only assisting their goals.

‘It is both dazzling and disquieting how reliant on Fernandes United have become.’

Lampard makes 3 changes but no room for Giroud: Chelsea predicted XI v Tottenham [Opinion]

Chelsea welcome London rivals Tottenham to Stamford Bridge this afternoon with the chance to go top of the table.

Frank Lampard will see a familiar face in the away dugout as Jose Mourinho returns to the Bridge as manager of Spurs, with both harbouring early title dreams following their respective strong starts.

Lampard’s side come into the clash unbeaten in 10 matches in all competitions and can call upon Kai Havertz and potentially Christian Pulisic once again as both men return to fitness.

Chelsea sealed qualification to the knockout stages of the Champions League in midweek, meaning they can go full strength for this one without the fear of another big game on the horizon.

The key man for the Blues will be Timo Werner – the German striker is in fine form and could target the visiting defence, which will be without Toby Alderweireld. Olivier Giroud, who came off the bench to score the winner against Rennes on Tuesday, could also be pushing for a start.

Here’s how we think Lampard will lineup, with three changes from the team which started in France five days ago.

Solskjaer admits to discussing poor form with this key player

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has defended Harry Maguire following major criticism over his form following a poor start to the campaign.

There are many who still hold reservations over the English defender but he was particularly struggling at the start of the season for club and country.

However, it’d be unfair to say he hasn’t since improved since, with Solskjaer choosing to play him out of his poor form.

Maguire joined from Leicester City in the summer of 2019 when he was considered to be amongst the best in the league.

Unfortunately for him, he joined for what was a world-record fee for a centre-back and that placed ridiculously high expectations on him.

Maguire’s impact on the team cannot be ignored as Manchester United’s defensive stats have tremendously improved since his arrival.

It’s also said that behind the scenes he’s a brilliant captain and leader and has played a big role in transforming the dressing room atmosphere.

The reservations that hang over his head have to do with his lack of acceleration, which leaves him exposed when United play a high line, and a tendency to be rash at times.

Solskjaer is clearly a fan of Maguire and given how much he spent on the defender, it’s unlikely he’s going anytime soon, as much as some fans may want.

Solskjaer addresses Bruno's tendency for the hairdryer treatment towards team-mates

Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes has been heavily praised by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who seemed to suggest he’s set the bar for the squad.

The Portuguese magician joined the club in January and it’s safe to say there’s been a huge change in the club’s fortunes since.

Solskjaer seemed to be heading for the exit before Bruno’s arrival but it was thanks to his immediate adaptation to his new surroundings that United were able to finish the league in third place.

The former Sporting Lisbon man’s impact on the team has been well documented and rightfully addressed and it’s easy to see his influence hasn’t waned.

Bruno continues to drag the Red Devils through matches on occasion and is arguably their most talismanic player.

Although the comparison may not be quite fully justified, Bruno’s impact has been so great that there are those who claim he is this generation’s Eric Cantona.

The stunning playmaker will have to win a few league titles first for that to be a fair comparison but the similarities are there.

Although Harry Maguire is the club’s official captain, it’s easy to see Bruno is arguably the more important leader, at least from the outside looking in.
