Arsenal were knocked out of the Europa League after losing 2-1 at home to Olympiakos

Match: Arsenal (1-0) Olympiakos
Venue: Emirates Stadium
Kick-Off (UK Time): 20:00 27/02/2020

It was a strong and confident start to the match from Arsenal. The Gunners moved the ball around the pitch well but it took some time before they could turn that into anything in the way of an opening goal.

The best chance in the opening exchanges came when Nicolas Pepe broke clear through on goal. The Ivorian was barrelling down on goal when he was brought down by two Olympiakos defenders at the same time. Pepe clipped the resulting free-kick just over the bar.

But things got a little sloppier for the Gunners after that. There were some wayward passes as the tempo dropped and Olympiakos grew into the match.

But suddenly, things kicked up a gear. Granit Xhaka slid a fine pass through for Bukayo Saka down the left flank. The Englishman’s cross was pinpoint and Alexandre Lacazette put it into the back of the net. Unfortunately, Saka was offside and the goal was disallowed.

Arsenal looked to impose themselves on the game after the halftime break. There were a couple of decent openings for them but again, the final pass eluded the Gunners.

But Olympiakos grew into it and started to find some joy down Arsenal’s right. They won a corner after breaking past Hector Bellerin and when the ball came in, Pape Cisse was left with a free header from 6 yards out to score with ease.

Suddenly, the tie was level and Arsenal knew they would need to outscore their opponents from then on. They didn’t look like doing it when Olympiakos defender Kostas Tsimikas broke clear and forced a decent save from Bernd Leno.

It took 75 minutes for Arsenal to get their first shot on target. Xhaka pinged a ball out to Pepe who cut back onto his left foot and powered his shot towards goal. From the rebound, the ball came back in for Lacazette who mistimed his opening from close range.

But still, the Gunners couldn’t find a way back into the game as normal time ticked away. With the scorelines tied, the match went into extra time.

The first half of extra time continued in very much the same way as regular time. The Gunners moved the ball around at a slow pace and struggled to create opportunities.

Again, they left space open at the other end and after the extra time break, Olympiakos broke clear and were unfortunate not to make it 2-0 on the night.

The match needed a moment of quality and it took 112 minutes on the night for it to come. A cross came in from the right flank and was flicked into the air by Gabriel Martinelli. The ball came down for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and with his first real opening of the match, the forward produced a wonderful overhead kick to make it 2-1 on aggregate.

It was just a case of seeing the game out for Arsenal against an Olympiakos side that looked like it had all of the stuffing knocked out of it. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be. A corner was cleared and from the resulting loose ball, the cross came into the box and Youssef El-Arabi tapped in to make it 1-2 on the night and 2-2 on aggregate.

But it looked like it would all be undone in added time of extra time. The ball rebounded off Olympiakos defenders and bounced straight into the path of Aubameyang. The Gunners captain was 5 yards out from goal and just had to pick his spot but he fluffed the chance well wide with what was one of the last kicks of the tie.
