Former Chelsea man Pat Nevin has claimed that Frank Lampard could turn to Marcos Alonso in Saturday’s huge game against Tottenham Hotspur.
Alonso has made just six Premier League starts for the Blues this season, with Cesar Azpilicueta and Emerson being regularly preferred.
Speaking to the official club website, Nevin explained why he feels Lampard will be tempted to give Alonso a rare run out at the weekend.
The last time Frank faced Jose, he had a tactical brainwave by switching successfully and unexpectedly to a 3-4-3. With Marcus Alonso fit, rested and a specialist in that formation, it could work. Considering the goal shipped from a dead ball against United, having three centre-backs on the field and the height of Marcus in there too, it will definitely be a temptation.

I think it would be a surprise to see Alonso thrown into a game with such large implications; Chelsea will drop out of the top four with another loss.
The Spaniard did, however, feature in the reverse fixture as part of a three-at-the-back system.
With that being said, if he is to play again I think it will be if Lampard goes with a 3-4-3 formation, as Nevin suggests, for the fifth time this season.
In my opinion, playing three in defence could give Chelsea the best chance of success against Jose Mourinho’s side.
The Blues have won three of the four games where the system has been utilised in this term and although I believe Alonso’s inclusion would be somewhat of a surprise, a formation change probably wouldn’t.
